smasher 1,055
I am going to biy a new scope from the states, thinking of a leopold vx111 6-18-50 to go on my 17 hmr,for rabbits, magpies etc.out to about 150 yards, which are small targets at that distance, also the ocasional fox on the lamp.what i was wondering is which rectical would best suit.I was thinking of a fine rectical as a head shot for a rabbit at distance is a pretty small target.Would you agree with this choice or if not what would you recommend Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
Get as fine as possible for the hmr, As if shooting at targets you dont want the crosshair covering the bullet hole, but the only drawback is it will be hard to pick up on the lamp, the mil-dot is pretty fine on the leupold so this may be a start check out leupolds website to find out what will suit http://www.leupold.com/ Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Only Leupold reticle I've seen in the flesh is the Boone & Crockett, it'd do both of those jobs well, lamping and corvid sniping. When I was buying my loopy, just a few weeks ago, I did consider the Varmint reticle (bought online, so didn't get the chance to look through), but for lamping I get the strong feeling it's going to be a pain. Reason I say this is that fine reticles can easily get lost under the lamp. It's just something to be aware of in making your choice. By the way I can put you onto a good Leupold scope seller if you decide to go ahead Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
I find myself agreeing with many people today (must stop this), 2 good responses already and I too would suggest you will have a problem with fine reticles in dim light or under the lamp, problem is, if you are pushing the HMR to 150 yards on birds you will also have a problem with heavier reticles. Style and size will become a very personal as well as practical choice, that's why there are so many types out there. ATB...I would be interested to hear what you settle on and how you get on with it Quote Link to post

Guest JohnGalway
You can save yourself more money again by not getting an illuminated reticle. Only my own opinion but if you're lamping and daytime shooting you won't need it. People say they're useful at dawn and dusk, never really found that myself but each to their own Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
IR'S are not worth the money you spend on them, look at the extra cost of them, and it's only a little LED. [light emitting diode] at about 50p worth built into a little bushing. Quote Link to post
