Open FAC Question

Recommended Posts

This question is on behalf of a friend, He has had an FAC for nearly three years and has a .22-250 along with his .17HMR.

He wants to chop in the .22-250 for a .243, i dont think the .243 will be a problem but do you think he would be granted an Open cert if he asked for it at this stage or would he have to wait the full five years.

I know that all police forces differ but any general comments, advice or experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks

If he asks nicely I can't see it being a problem tbh, so long as he has done a fair bit of shooting in that time (which they will only judge by ammo use anyway)

Thanks Mr L

I think it will be ok, he has shot around 400 rounds with the centrefire and around a 1000 with the .17HMR without any problems, so i think 1400 safe shots should be in his credit.

I am with gwent and had mine done after a year of shooting a 243 and i had had my ticket for about 18 months but what i did was get together a list of dates that you had oppertunities to take your gun on other land that you didnt have time to get checked so you had to turn the offers down, also get a few more farms that you have picked up and need clearing so they can see you are moving on and it would be in thier interests to not have to go check land every time you pick up more, and as was suggested the more shots you have done the better..

All round some fairly sensible answers I'd say, but you have not made it clear if this is Target or Field work??? With the 2 calibres mentioned I obviously assume it is field work!

1000 and 400 in 3 years :hmm::hmm: ...now that's a difficult one, I do know a few people who use less, but I and many others use substantially more....don't expect that will be a problem though...problem could be with deer though...more and more there seems to be a requirement for a DSC or a Mentor for deer although fox is commonly granted for .243 without!

An Open after 3 years would normally be granted if the FAC owner has the land, and has been a good boy in that time!!:thumbs::thumbs:

Sorry Deker,

should have made it clear, he uses it for purely field work, the ground which the rifles is currently passed for is not a great amount and doesnt have a large amount of foxes on it as it has been keepered for years. He has made a note, as mentioned in a previous post, of the amount of times he has been asked to shoot and had to refuse on the grounds of a closed certificate. Sounds quite promising for him and thanks for all the replies.
