Gaz_1989 9,539
Have any of you got pet insurance for your dogs? Just wondering what the average to pay is? And what do you get for it? Does it cost more if 'declared' as a working dog? I remember my folks had it for our EBT and it was about £15 a month but they hardly ever paid up because his illnesses were 'genetic' and not covered. Didnt cover anti-biotics, steroids or wormers either. Just let me know who has got it and what you get for your money etc and if you reccomend it? I was thinking about setting up my own 'insurance pot' and just put £30 a month into a pot and let it build up for the dreaded visits to the vets. Cheers Gaz Quote Link to post

Used it when my old bull terrier had an operation, would of cost £1700. Had to pay an excess though, 50 quid i think. Cheers Gaz Quote Link to post

abley 0
I had cover on a dogue de bordeaux with pet plan. She had quite a few probs before giving in and they paid up everything no quibbling. The hyperthyroidism ( what a mouthfull!) was genetic but still covered. And emergency dental work, just nothing cosmetic. It was £22 a month i think but the breed was to blame for that price. Ossie 11
i've currently got the lurcher insured with the NFU, it costs about 7 quid a month, and it covers him for 2 grands worth of treatment per accident/injury. i'm going to get the terrier insured with sainsbury's, and switch the lurcher to them when his policy is due for renewal. my cousin is a veterinary nurse and says that sainsbury's are good, not too pricey (about 12 quid a month, they cover up to 6,500 per illness/injury for that, and lifelong treatment as well), and they almost always pay up with no problems. don't mention it's a working dog, and say it's a mongrel. also, my cousins top tip is don't say you might breed from it. she's known people to deny an animal is for breeding, then get it pregnant, say it was an accident, and have emergency cesearians paid for by the insurance! putting money away is a good idea, for routine stuff like vaccinations & wormer, but what if your dog breaks it's leg in a months' time? you won't have 1500 quid in the pot by then, and it's no good telling the vet to put it down - the hardcore money-grabbers won't if it can be fixed. a friends labrador got run over, she couldn't afford the bill (somewhere in the region of 600 quid, about ten years ago) & wanted it put down, but the vets refused as the dog could still have a "reasonable" quality of life. dytkos 17,861
KHS (equine) Found them on the web. Pay about £100 a year per dog. Have had over a grand worth back for my lurcher's (cross breed) injurys over the last 5 years and it's only gone up a fiver! Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks to everyone who replied. Will look into some of the companys which you have reccomended for when i get a pup. Some of them sound cheaper than i was expecting actually and i guess you never know when it may come in handy. Thanks again Gaz Quote Link to post
Guest WILF
Good man for getting some insurance GAZ............JMHO but its vital to have insurance on a running dog. I am with pet plan, its about £15 a month..........but you only need 1 broken leg and that 10 years of premiums. Its a no brainer! Quote Link to post
