Right folks.............

I am having a go at growing my own potatoes for the first time. They are in compost in black plastic bags - two seed potatoes in each bag as advised by the seed provider. My question is this - do i need to feed/fertilize them? The shoots are not up above the soil yet but should i feed them and at what stage?

All advice appreciated.

Could ye not ask the seed provider, mate? I mean, seriously; Anyone who's - presumably? - in the business of issuing seed spuds should have a pretty thorough knowledge of those spuds. Bit like breeding a Dog, isn't it? Ye'd expect a breeder to know what's in there, what'll come out and how it'll likely perform in a given circumstance. See what I'm saying?

Failing that; What sort of spuds are they? Maris Pipers? Whites? Pinks? Roosters ....? I'm no expert, but I imagine all these different spuds were developed as much for a certain enviroment as flavour. So it may all 'depend' to some degree.

Tried Google?

My sons trying that this year where half filling old dog food bags with horse muck then as the tatties's grow where topping the bags up with the compost from grow bags .Just watch the potatoe leaves if there not a nice green colour there lacking some thing and give them a liquid feed of the stuff for tomatoes

well dont no why you guys are going to all the trouble of grow bags, all that manure .

if you dig a nice fresh piece of mud in garden, pop your seed potatoes in you wont need any feed. as the ground hasnt had anything grown ie veg before. so will grow well with water alone and clean the little plot out you dig out best thing for new veg plot is grow tattys.and you dont need to buy seeds do your own.get some small tattys leave in a lit area on a egg carton, they will seed them selves in time when shoots on them are few cm and green plant in ground with shoots poiting to surface.all the best with that lovely veg :victory:
