how do I catch them foxes.

Recommended Posts

thanks for the advice guys,

There is an article in working terriers on this site written by a bloke who uses staffies on foxes, do they readilly do the job or are his just an exception? Perhaps running one with my whippet may help him out in the dispatching department?

I've yet to see a stafford in Australia that were like that blokes. The ones here seem to be the more show type ie wider and shorter. Not to say they won't work but a bit of leg under them wouldn't go amiss. If you are working heavy cover then a terrier will do a job for you so no reason your russells wouldn't do the same job as that blokes staffs.

I had a whippetx and she caught more foxes while beating cover with hounds she was about 22" she just didn t have the physical ability to finish the job but she tried, its not the height its the build my mates wheaten x was same height and killed em for fun,the whippet lacked in jaw power and could nt shake the weight to finish it.

thanks stabs,

Thats what I thaught as the staffies I normaly see are not what you would call ''built for speed'', maybe a cross to a whippet a produce something like a smaller bully/grey. I had a look through some of the fox hunting pics blokes have posted up here, and I think they might be dealing with bigger foxes than what we have here some of them look like theywould give a bull arab a run for its money :icon_eek::icon_eek:

mate dont bother chasing foxes in thick scrub also i wouldnt bother with terriers because im assuming your a vic bloke so its likly therell be a few wobat holes that cause trouble where abouts you live? also a stag has as good if not better temperment them a wippet so i wouldnt worry about that if you are a vic bloke theres plenty of good wippet x stags in the paper these days get them you wont go wrong

I am in sydney, and I can't seem to find any stag crosses nearby. There is not many wombat holes where I hunt but there are some so I will take that into consideration good point. As I said all I have now is 1 whippet pup so I am just researching at this point, I want to make sure I get the right team to cover most areas.

We used to catch a few foxes with a bedlington x whippet and a few crap russells about 20 years ago but it'd take all of them to do the job. Later on I had a little lurcher and a couple of terriers that did the job so there's no reason yours can't do the job

the only stag crosses i have found in the papers have been crossed to pig dogs but I am in negotiations with wy wife at the moment as to getting a pure staghound, because we checked out the link put on by disturbed and it said,'' Temperament - Very calm around the home.''. But she is still alittle put off by thier size as our daughter is only 19 months old, and we want her to be able to walk around the yard without being knocked over. we would want a bitch so hopefully I can find one that aint to big. If anyone has any pics of staghounds that are not that big or are with kids in the pic that may help my cause please post them ;) .

Victor, do you run other dogs with your whippet or just the one dog?

Distubed, are foxes near impossible to catch in the thick, should I just stick to the more open country for foxes?

bi run him by his self, made a friend with a whippet x bull and going foxing this weekend. but as long as you keep on giving chances with the foxes you'll have no problams

staghounds are very good around kids, my two stags one a pup are with my daughter everyday and shes 19months old too!! been with them her whole life, they are biggish but are not dumb by no means, very gentle(in fact deerhounds i consider the gentleman of the dog world)

sounds like stag/whippet may be the sort of thing you are after

there is a few guys on ozziedoggers who can help you with that, who run smaller staggy types
