how do I catch them foxes.

Hi all,

 

I am new to coursing and the use of lurchers etc but i have hunted pigs with dogs for some time. As pigs are so far from where i live and rabbits and foxes flood the local farms I have made the change to coursing and ferreting.I have a pure whippet i will use on bunnies, but I am interested in chasing foxes. I live in australia were it is still legal so i just want some advice as to choice of dog/dog's. The areas I hunt range from open hilly country to thicker scrub and bush country.

 

Will a team of 2 or 3 pure whippets work for foxes aswell as rabbits.

Or should I cross my whippet to something else, if so, what should the cross be.

Or should I run a team of dogs eg. 2 whippets, 2 jack russels

And how would a staffy x whippet go 1/2 x 1/2.

well youve really started somthing with this post mate!!!!! i wouldnt of thought whippit x anything would be much use for sustained fox control.....alot of lads over hear USED to use abpt x greyhound 5/8 3/8 but to be honest any decent sized game lurcher will do the job...collie/grey will do the trick....i'll be bloody shocked if this post dont do atleast 100 replies

woops, as i said I am only new and the whippet is for the rabbits I just was'nt sure how they or thier crosses would go on foxes but i geuss you answered my question there. So what you're saying is the larger lurchers such as the bully/greyhound or collie/greyhound would do better than the smaller dogs like a staffy/whippet or kelpie/whippet on foxes. Taking into consideration that, as mentioned, I hunt in some fairly thick areas.

what about those dogs that you use/ed for kangaroos. they seem like they would do the job

Alot of lads where you live use stags or bullxgreys, they should help you out.

The dogs used for roos and the stags that i have seen are generaly grey cross deerhound or along those lines. I am trying to keep smaller dogs now as they are easier for my wife to mannage and my daughter loves to play with them.

Dont know about that mate! wippet x bull or wippet x grey can would do the job easily. a couple of good working wippets can slso hold there own. ive seen lads on here posting that they have done foxes (pre ban) with there wippets.

there is a bloke from America writes in earth dog running dog runs a apt x whippet with his terriers it takes fox, coon, possum & groundhog, Its a nice little dog that looks like it would be good on the bunnies. ATB Pritch

check out http://www.ozziedoggers.org there is a dedicated sight hound section just for us Aussie hunters, where you can see what types of dogs we use over here

 

stags and roo dogs would be the most common and easiest to get, there are other lines of dogs with say airedale in them used for foxes, in a few days i'll probably post an article on there from a newspaper with a good write up on stag types and foxes in VIC

 

what is the country you running in like? if its all busha nd u'll be chasing foxes in it then that will be interesting

i would just use a team of 3-4 whippets from workinglines

your whippet will hold the fox but you will need to be there quick with a stick or some thing, as i hunt fox with my whippet.

There is an article in working terriers on this site written by a bloke who uses staffies on foxes, do they readilly do the job or are his just an exception? Perhaps running one with my whippet may help him out in the dispatching department?

 

Victor, do you run other dogs with your whippet or just the one dog?

 

Distubed, are foxes near impossible to catch in the thick, should I just stick to the more open country for foxes?

small dogs are no good for anything bigger than a rabbit BOLLOCKS your`ll hear this statement alot mate especially on here from the right breeding and the right entering they will hold there own mate honestly trust someone who speaks through experiance not hear say...I have only 2 lurchers biggest is 23" mate and there is no one that can tell me i dont get through my fair share of mixed game from pot to pest control.......
