About this time of year here and in many rural parts you can hear the familiar sound of hooves on tarmack,not the hunt nor the toffs on their steeds but traditional Romany travellers.Some we see year after year on roadsides or leading their homes up a shady hollow.Some i have shared a jug of cider with and see them a couple of times a year like an old couple in their 's Jason and his wife Delilah.

In latter years it seemed that the only roma left on the road in their colorful caravans were the older generation,the young lured off the leafy lanes to live 'on site' with all its modern trappings of electricity , water , toilets and a postal address.But today i saw a sight that cheered me up no end , on the side of a road in the mendip hills under the protective arms of the beach and oak was a young couple in their 20's living in a traditional caravan painted bright and happy,their little encampment was little changed from the Roma of hundreds of years ago,a couple of chooks scratching about in the leafmold,abig heavy black kettle suspended above an open fire on a traditional 'kettle iron', looking very guilty of something were a couple of wiry longdogs who looked like they may well provide their master with an occasional conie supper! I hope that the next time i see them they will have a couple of kids hanging on to mothers skirt,compleat with grubby hands and equally grubby beaming faces, bare foot ,with a catty hanging out of their back pockets and complete with a cheeky 'oi oi wots up then mista!'

Theres an old guy who we still see in his vardo travelling around Lincs and Notts, I know Juckler and Chris Hickling see the same guy, the old style looks romantic and the thought of sitting around a fire does appeal but unfortunately the lure of sky, a warm bed and the other creature comforts are too well established............

Great post fishfish , i saw a vardo a few months back going through a town by me ,was old and looked like it needed some work, a couple of young lads , one on bare back , the other in the vardo ,must have been taking it somewhere .We get lots of travellers in these parts , they come from all round the place to go to the` junction 10 bacon man` ( a proper old fashion butcher ).

That and the fact that the vast majority of ronkers that travel the roads nowadays have no Romany blood in them whatsoever, more's the pity as the true Romanies are generally a decent sort of folk. the dross that trolls the streets these days are really what Wilf is describing, tea leaves, that'd have anything you've got in the blink of an eye.

 

That said, when they pass by our way on the way to Appleby, some of the Real McCoy are a sight to behold and take pride in their belongings like no other people, a lesson that could be learned by the shite gangsta style twats that roam the streets thieving, so it's not just a gypsy thing is it.

 

What I really love to see are the double decker horse drawns, painted up and looked after, a real rarity and probably a dying trend, shame.

There's a bloke that lives in a small village near Maidstone who has a couple of lovely vardos. He runs a few burger vans and has a bungalow that backs on to woods I used to hunt in. He's made a few bob and has the horses heads on his drive gate and a few modern wagons in his paddock. He clearly has a soft spot for his roots though as the he has two vardos in his front yard.

 

We'd get the gypos land in Beckton for the fair and it was a nightmare when they'd gone...bags of shit everywhere and my old dog was drawn to them like a magnet :sick:

They'd drink in the pub in Tesco's car park and they were a laugh...bet on anything
