Had a chat with a friend this evening who has had my larson for the past week, With one magpie caught and others seen fluttering by the trap,, Now he is convinced this is beacuse i have two call birds on the go,, But saying that i had seven in three days in my garden. I have had the trap dropped back of to my shoot now,, to really clamp down on the maggies,, but with the 2 call birds still together. ANd if the next couple of days dry a blank then i will cull one of the call birds.

Please share your thoughts and opionions :victory:

Why have you got 2 call birds ? The whole principle of the trap is that the free magpies start a territorial argument with the the one in the box.

Surely having 2 there already is just going to confuse all of them ?

So if one pops its clogs then i have a back up ;) I think i will probally cull one of the birds in the morning.

but lloyd, as your a true country man, and check, feed , and water them daily, ensuring they have plenty of shelter, you wont have much off a problem with them poping there clogs..

but in my opinion, id only have one call bird.. iv found moving the trap even a few metres can help catch the shyer birds that just seam to hop around all day..

Only use ONE call bird Lloydy........as incoming birds will think a pair have taken over the territory........and will be reluctant to take them on.

Moving the Larsen even a few feet............can often make a difference to the catching potential of the trap. As always with all forms of trapping.........experiment with different locations until you find the most successful one.

My mate dropped my trap back to me last night. So i took it down the lake at eight last night,,Kept the two callbirds, And had one magpie waiting for me earleir on when i was checking all traps,, Anyway culled the two i was using as call birds and kept the fresh bird from the latest capture!!

Alimac,, I make it possible to check my Larsons twice a day,, (And other tunnel fenns once a day) I have been feeding my birds on tinned dog food,, carrion mostly and have had those birds for about three weeks untill rodat of course lol

I will be out agian this evening on trap patroll.

Forgive me if i read this wrong but are you saying you culled 2 strange birds and kept a local for a decoy .The whole idea of the larsen is to provoke a reaction from birds with territoy against a stranger .Using a local bird CAN defeat this objective as local pairs will know the call bird ,even if you cant see the diference .

Foxdropper,, Yes it makes sence,,, but i went all summer last year on four hundred acres kept switching my call birds over every few days or so, And there was not a magpie in sight all summer,, its the way ive been taught by a old keeper, and its the way i see fit ;) Also may i just point out i will be moving this trap shortly a few hundred acres up shoot so this bird will not be local.

All the best LL
