Guest little_lloyd
Had a chat with a friend this evening who has had my larson for the past week, With one magpie caught and others seen fluttering by the trap,, Now he is convinced this is beacuse i have two call birds on the go,, But saying that i had seven in three days in my garden. I have had the trap dropped back of to my shoot now,, to really clamp down on the maggies,, but with the 2 call birds still together. ANd if the next couple of days dry a blank then i will cull one of the call birds. Please share your thoughts and opionions Quote Link to post
john b 38
Why have you got 2 call birds ? The whole principle of the trap is that the free magpies start a territorial argument with the the one in the box. Surely having 2 there already is just going to confuse all of them ? Quote Link to post

Guest Ditch_Shitter
Why not get another trap on the go, out of range of the one ye have? Quote Link to post

Rolfe 2
Only use ONE call bird Lloydy........as incoming birds will think a pair have taken over the territory........and will be reluctant to take them on. Moving the Larsen even a few feet............can often make a difference to the catching potential of the trap. As always with all forms of trapping.........experiment with different locations until you find the most successful one. Rolfe. Quote Link to post

LL Forgive me if i read this wrong but are you saying you culled 2 strange birds and kept a local for a decoy .The whole idea of the larsen is to provoke a reaction from birds with territoy against a stranger .Using a local bird CAN defeat this objective as local pairs will know the call bird ,even if you cant see the diference . Guest little_lloyd
Foxdropper,, Yes it makes sence,,, but i went all summer last year on four hundred acres kept switching my call birds over every few days or so, And there was not a magpie in sight all summer,, its the way ive been taught by a old keeper, and its the way i see fit Also may i just point out i will be moving this trap shortly a few hundred acres up shoot so this bird will not be local. All the best LL Quote Link to post

georgehare 0
If i see a pair and put a trap near to where ive seen them if i catch one of the pair i normally put that one in the trap to draw in its mate. Works for me Quote Link to post
