A keeper mate of mine phoned me to say that he was having big problems with the pheasant catchers and i expected him to say it was a fox but no ,it was a cat that has taken to somehow up ending the catchers and killing a bird ,letting the rest go .His catchers are the wire, with the door on the bottem ,funnel type and the door is tied shut .We think this cat has been scaring the birds into turning the catcher over ,which they could easily by all climbing the wire on one side .When the catcher is on its side ,the cat has scratched the baler twine until it breaks ,presumably .Four catchers in three evenings done the same .The keeper even saw the moggie on top a catcher but no gun or dog and the bugger got away .No shot guns as he wants to keep this wood quiet for the pheasants,so opted for the .22

The keeper was to stand at the end of the wood while i pushed it through quietly.Didnt get far when i saw a big black and white cat stalking along a dry ditch .I had the face mask on and full realtree so felt confident of calling it .A low pitched squeal saw the cat belting towards me .Isnt it just the best feeling when a plan comes together :clapper: .Had to cough to make it stop at about 20 yds and a low velocity put paid to that moggies tricks .Nice one FD.

I would have liked to get a pic of the damage the cat did to a catcher but the keeper here is very meticulous in his clearing up any casualties :whistling: ,always has been .His boss is very hard on him .

Anyway ,he was over the moon that i had him and took me for a pint .Cant say fairer than that :drink:

thats a strange one.... he dont want a shot from a shot gun but he was happy to let you walk right through the wood.. a strange choice in my opinion if keeping his birds settled was a high priority... in my first season i kept on seeing one near a realease pen, and didnt shoot it for the very same reason, but a fellow keeper said "one shot will spook them for a minute or so, a cat or fox will be spooking them twice a day at least, day in day out"

but well done, bet he is well happy, them pussys are worse than a fox, better hunters and far more agile.. i get 3 times more than i do foxs up here, im sure im a drop off point for someone....

Like you have said mate ,the fecking cat was unsettling them more than me or the sound of a silenced .22.

Priorities mate . :victory:

Silly point, that cat looks too fat to be a feral one, I know nothing about feral cats at all - is that a feral cat or someone's pet?

Country ferals are not like some of the squitty ,often unhealthy, town ferals that have to scavenge for food.A country cat that perfects its hunting technique has the choice of some really rich pickings. Not just game -birds but may other forms of wildlife -including rare song-birds and dormice.

It doesn't matter if the cat's feral of not. It's classed the same as a feral, as soon as it leaves the owners property, or so I've been led to believe.

Well done i hate cats too & even if near a pen as said birds settle down after a minute but a cat will stress them & move them.Even if a non feral it was in the woods doing damage. Ali looks like i need to come up for a nites lamping as i love cat work with the spot-light.

Legally it doesn't matter if it's feral or not, and i don't mind in terms of whether it gets shot or not. But I do think that if you shoot Tiddles you need tell its owner, just so they aren't worried sick about their precious moggy. If someone shot my cat and didn't tell me, I would go apeshit if I ever found out who did it. Not the shooting of the cat, but the letting me worry.
