I was just wondering what flies to use for salmon through out the season, I sort of know about the colour change of flies through out the year but could do with a little extra help with names of flies and what time of year to use them or just a good all season fly!

Information is gratefully recieved.

have a look to see if the federation at ovingham / wylam have a web site.... i dont think tyne fish are fussy as far as salmon go, a certain bloke who fishs wylam bridge pool uses a spinning rod, a nut for a weight, and some of the shrabbest tubes you will ever see, and he catchs alot of fish... traditional ally shrimp, cascades, and silver stoats were about the only flys i ever used down there... just had a invite to fish the bridge pool at hexham :clapper: rool on august

Here's a fly that I find works well all year round. It's called a Bann Special here in Ireland, it's an irish pattern the smaller ones I use in low water conditions. The heavy ones when the water is heavy. Sometims the smaller flies can work much better when you are gettin takes but not hooking up. Dropping down a size can sometimes make the difference between hooking and not hooking. JMO

Sorry the pic ain't that clear but I don't have one of those big supershot type cameras.

shrimp flies always do well on my local river but ive never had much luck with them ive had more sucess with the gary dog, willie gun , thunder and lighting and G.P

There has been quite a bit of talk about the gold garry dog, that seems to do well on the tyne. The pot bellied pigs to well for people aswell but like you I have had no luck on them or the shrimp flies yet!

I may be stating the obvious but ask the locals what has bee hatching lately and use an imitation of that. also I find black leaches work well alothough hard to cast.

Hmmm, normally all the midges are hatching thi time of year and liitle black flies are good for the brownies. Don't know whats hatching that the salmon like. Ill ask around
