Holland 0
I notice that no one in this section seems to know anything about flight pond decoys, but I wonder if someone can help me with this question? On my small flight pond I have shallow water at each end, both areas sutible for locating my recently purchased auto feeder. One end is very open with sloping grassy banks, however the other end has dense undergrowth (brambles, willow and hawthorne) all around it and submerged branches in the water. Which end should I put my feeder? I'm afraid that if I put it on the open side it might be seen and stolen, but would putting it in the overgrown end leave feeding ducks open to fox attack? Any comments would be grateful thanks.
teknystoddy 0
I personally would put it in the open end and take the chance of it getting nicked, if you put it in thick cover the birds wont feel happy feeding at it and it wont be serving its purpose. I take it that you are putting it in the water? You could chain and padlock it to a large heavy object which you could submerge under the water so it doesnt look too unsightly. I hope you get a solution youre happy with. All the best, TT.
Holland 0
Thanks TT That's what I thorght, but it's good to here it from someone else. Will let you know how it goes!
foxkiller1968 0
i would put the feeder on the open end of your and take the chance of theft but i would put a electric fence around the open end to keep any cattle or sheep away from your grain and keep old charlie out as well mate
Holland 0
Thanks for all your suggestions. The field the pond is in does sometimes have sheep in it, but the feeder will be in the middle of a shallow area of water. Will sheep be able to reach the grain under water?? foxkiller1968 0
no mate you will be ok if the feeder is in the shallow part of the water
teknystoddy 0
Remember as a rough guide dabbling ducks generally will only take grain up to a depth no greater than the top of your wellies. Any deeper and they wont bother. Might want to bear this in mind when deciding where exactly to put yer feeder. Also makes life easier for topping it up obviously, as you dont need to put waders on. Just as a matter of interest, what feeder are you using? Im using a Fatboy 3 which we got last season, seems ok, not fantastic though. YIS, TT.
Holland 0
Depth of water is just under 1ft so no problem there. I'm using a Cabela feeder, this was the cheapest I could find so I got 2, one as a spare.
