Rolfe 2
Can it be too wet to trap moles? set a fet traps today but there was standing water in the bottom of the runs will the moles still use the runs??? They will use the runs, and moles are pretty good swimmers by the way.........but in prolonged wet spells they tend to head for drier ground like hedge bottoms or woodland. Rember traps will not be as efficient if they are clogged with wet clay type soil. Rolfe. Quote Link to post
trappa 517
They will tend to look for drier ground, but although setting traps in the rain can be a pain, you can catch a lot when its wet for some reason. Quote Link to post
ianrob 2
Can it be too wet to trap moles? set a fet traps today but there was standing water in the bottom of the runs will the moles still use the runs??? Rolfes reply is good, just thought I'd add a little anecdote. Years ago, possibly 30 or so, I was catching moles on a large farm. At the bottom end of a couple of fields was a peaty area that wasn't in cultivation, but had moles active in it. I had a Duffus left set in a run, and as it was on the way I walked round the farm, I left it down. I needed the rest elsewhere on the farm, as I wasn't overloaded with traps. The moles in this peaty bit, filled the trap every day and I tried all I could think of, but all to no avail. Eventually I bumped in to an old guy who caught moles, and asked his advice. He said just keep setting the trap, you'll get him the first wet day, (it had been a very dry spring). A couple of weeks later, I set off into driving rain round the traps and as I neared the peaty area, I recalled the advice, and was indeed delighted to find the trap with two in it. I checked the rest and on the way back noticed the trap had sprung again. To my delight it had another in it. Weeks of frustration then three in a morning. Just shows the effect the weather can have on worm and bug life, and thus on the moles. take care ian. Quote Link to post
