Guest CharlieC
I had 3 lads up a few years back to hunt and they had cattle dog x greyhounds, they werent my cup of tea at all, my mates dog spent the entire weekend trying to launch itself at Casper and latch on to him, all 3 of the lads agreed they can be very "primitive" and aggressive dogs. They were very heavy and thick-set too and I didnt find them all that fast or useful. They caught a few rabbits but I wouldnt say they were as good or as biddable as a collie/greyhound. When I first saw them at Chatsworth I liked the look of them, big broad solid looking dogs, some of them look a bit like a pit x, so I invited the lads up to see their dogs work, and allthough they are really nice sound lads and we had a good enough weekend, I was a bit dissappointed with the dogs as far as action went and it made me resolve to stick to collie/greyhounds! MIKE 18
:11: :11: :11: I wonder why this woman that breeds cattle dogs said it would be a bad idea crossing them with a greyhound ? It's the same things over and over with picking a lurcher cross someone says this is good others say no they're shite .........IMO you can only comment on a cross when you have had that particular cross yourself and can obtain an unbiased opinion ................ I have a first cross Kelpie Greyhound who is in no way agrressive unless he is provoked by another dog but if I had a dog that wouldn't retaliate when picked on then I wouldn't be to happy with it to be honest ............ the dog has done evreything I have asked of him to date and that includes and few of big rabbits so he is no way heavy and slow ....................... Loki have you actually owned a cattle dog cross or kelpie cross then ? Quote Link to post
philg 0
Sorry Lads just trying to help out here.Rather than have a little tap at the breed. Why not have a look at the ad first then put your opions across!!!!The dog was off to RSPCA if no home was found??? I own a Kelpie/whippet and if you are of the opion that these dags are aggresive then that was you handling the dog not the dogs fault as is so often the case with lads that think they are buying a self training dog :search: go out and part with the cash. 6 months later decide the dog isn't self training after all!!!! theres plenty of you out there aswell!!! shaun v 3
people find it easier to judge the dog but not the owners, Quote Link to post
Kane 2
Doesnt realy matter what anybody says or thinks, if most lads wanted to give a certain lurcher type a go,they would. Quote Link to post
Guest CharlieC
I can only comment from the experience I have had and that was when the 3 lads came up with them and they told me themselves that they are very fiery dogs and not for everyone. When they first arrived, one lad has his bitch in the car and it was going ballistic at the other dogs, apparently the dog is like that, it wont tolerate any other dogs near its property! The other lads dog was the same, he never had to lock his van put it that way :11: Now horses for courses some people like that, I dont, I would rather have a friendly dog that I can have a day out with anyone and not be embarrassed or have my mind half on the job cos my dog is a loony that wants to fight all the time. When we went hunting we had to split up cos they get very aggressive over catch and fights can break out easily. If the pure cattle dog is aggressive then obviously it stands to reason a halfcross is going to inherit a fair percentage of this temperament. I saw 5 of these dogs and all were very similar in temperament, but with 3 different owners so I reckon its in the breeding of the dogs, and nothing to do with the handlers as there are all IMO good dogmen who can train a dog to a high standard. Now these cattle dogs crosses are real one-man dogs, very protective and stand-offish with strangers, if thats the type of dog you like they will suit you, I prefer friendlier, more biddable dogs, but hey everyones different. As for kelpie crosses, I havent come across any aggression in the ones I have seen, they were nice dogs, and worked well, they were also much lighter framed than the cattle dog cross and seemed more useful BUT and its a big but, I felt their breeder did wrong in using the whippet/greyhound cross as they are a wee bit on the small side for all round work and I think a straight kelpie/greyhound cross would work better. This particular breeder  also dilutes the kelpie blood with collie before crossing to the whippet grew so that is probably why they are more biddable. Just my wee thruppence worth Quote Link to post

Guest CharlieC
I have seen total wankers who have had decent dogs and really sound guys with crap dogs and everything else in between so I say judge the dog and the man as 2 seperate entities :11: :11: and of course you can insult a guy about his car, his missus, his job, hell even the size of his  but insult his dog and that will usually upset him the most :11: :11: Quote Link to post
