Just interested in line breeding and was wondering if anyone really knows what they re at ,how close can you breed without running into problems ,for example if you breed say father to daughter can you go grandfather to grandaughter etc and when do you stop or do most just experiment and hope for the best???

IN MY LIFE IN DOGS I THINK I HAVE SOLD 7 0R 8 PUPS FROM THREE DIFFERENT LITTERS OVER THE PAST 35 YEARS . I HAVE HAD REQUESTS OF PUPS FROM NEAR TO 30 DIFFERENT MEMBERS ON A FEW FORUMS, LAST YEAR I HAD THREE DIFFERENT BITCHES IN HEAT IN MY YARD, THEY WERE NEVER BRED.

I RECEIVED A BULL X BITCH OFF A MEMBER ON THIS FORUM AFTER I ADVERTISED FOR IT, I STATED I WANTED 100% DOG/ BITCH. IN THE END I GOT THE BITCH, AFTER A TWO EVENINGS OUT WITH IT, I RELISED THE BITCH WAS NOT A 100% , I INFORMED THE GUY THE DOG WAS NOT A 100%, AND WAS OFFERED MY MONEY BACK.

I only go as close as an uncle niece mating. This generally gets very good results, as long as there is some outcross in there anyway. This "LOCKS" in genes as hunting with hounds quite rightly said, I like that thinking. But stevie g 2005, breeds such as the PB are different. With such pure stuff as PBs and Greyhounds you can breed tight and get away with it as the blood is genuinly "pure" and these breeds are without defect anyway. It's when you line breed stock with dubious or with poor backgrounds problems can arrise, the show dog people know this only too well!

You can have a good dog bred from two seperate bloodlines that if you try to concentrate that blood just because of the sires quality, you invariably end up concentrating the not so good dams blood and end up with bland flat tempered pups, rather than get the sires desired traits.

A B C D from same bitch....A, B C same litter or same parents , D half brother/sister mate D to both A+B, best workers from those mated together, mate back D, best back to C or AB.. thats if they all work by which point ABC+ D are now to old to breed, plus the parents of ABCD could well have been bred the same way so good and bad points are just waiting to jump out ....you also need to mate ABCD to new blood and test it and bring it in at a later date at maybe 33% 25%, i like it to be 12%...

so the turth is half the time if your testing your dogs and then breeding them your line/inbreeding plans will fall into place because you will mate the best to the best when tested...you can mate father to daughter granfather to grand daughter/daughter and so on or grand dam, don't be looking at your dog line, keep an eye on the bitches small size poor health, poor litter size.....worker to worker test them hard because its the under world which finds the weakness in your lines ... its like a game of chess, good luck
