A few rats.....

Recommended Posts

Some of you may have read over on the terrier board that we had a bit of a session a few weeks ago and caught 86 rats. Since then, with no birds in the shed, I've been baiting them.

With a long bank holiday weekend, and the prospect of new birds arriving, I decided to have a bit of a trapping session, and reduce the numbers right down.

Had a good few with the Fenn Mk4's:

with a bit of help from a monarch (notice the nose of my 'trainee technician!):

We managed this little pile over the four days:

So, hopefully, I wont have to look at cheeky buggers like this again:

19 and a half inches Glenn :whistling: I'm still waiting for a twenty incher..........

Before you tell me off about the state of that particular trap, it was dyed and waxed, but that chicken crap, combined with disinfectant soon makes em look a mess. They're all in for an overhall and re-prep this week........honest guv... :notworthy:

Nice result, Matt. Bring me that 20 incher too! :D (Must say, my mouth was watering as I surveyed ye line up there! Thought he might have been there)

I couldn't comment yesterday because - due to a known perculiarity - ye pic's wouldn't show then. Strange, but there it is. Probably me.

Matt what bait did you use in the Monarch

On this occasion Al, I used whole wheat. It is slightly different to a normal situation here, because the rats have been used to having everything on tap, until two weeks ago when the food, water, and warm burrows where removed.

I'm a great believer in 'horses for courses' when it comes to baits. I've always found that Mr Rural Rat prefers whole wheat over everything else; occasionally you need to resort to something a bit different, but usually it works well.

Mr Urban Rat seems to prefer something a bit more smelly, which is usually animal based. Fish, lard, and guts seem to work very well IMHO.

Genuine Fenn Mk4's are an excellent tool IMO. I've always been a fan of semi permanent tunnels on jobs like this, using wooden three sided tunnels as a basis for a more natural tunnel made from materials from the immediate locality. On this occasion, the tunnels where made from the floor panels which were stacked up waiting to be cleaned - I'll see if I have a pic to illustrate.

I'm also having great success on this farm using Kness break back traps installed in AF rat boxes, which are positioned around the perimeter of the buildings. Once this infestation is fully controlled, I will be relying solely on the Kness traps, as I don't see the point in having loads of bait lying around for the odd passing rat.

Do ye bait the Kness's, Matt? If so, what with, please?

I have baited them with a few grains of wheat, quite sucessfully in the past Ditch. On this particular job, I've baited them with a bit of mars bar pushed into the round bait holder. I've only baited these to try and get the rats to stop long enough for a good neck strike; they work quite well just using them as 'run throughs' like a fenn, but you get quite alot of foul catches as the rats tend to be running through.

The AF rat box is, IMHO, the best plastic box on the market. Its so versitle and the fact that the Kness is held in place so well makes it an invaluble tool.

More unusual 'bye' catches with this system have included; an adder, and a stoat! I do have a picture of the stoat somewhere, I'll dig it out...
