Badger Sett/Fox Earth

Recommended Posts

Ages ago now someone was asking about the difference between Fox earths and Badger setts.....well here is a picture i found in my archives of a Badger sett. Note the scraped out bedding that old brock changes on a nightly basis.

There is no difference..........reynard will lay up anywhere...........if in doubt leave well alone!!

Errr..... there IS a difference between a fox earth and a badger sett.......but i agree with your point that both charlie and brock will share living quarters and rabbits as well for that matter. And yes you are right.......if in any doubt leave well alone. The point of the picture was to show those who may not know........the signs of an occupied badger sett.

i disagree there is a difference in shape signs around the hole etc, although a fox will lay up in a badger hole as they are lazy diggers rarely will you get a badger in a fox hole. so i think it is important to know what a badger hole looks like so as to avoid and not to break the law...

Yes I agree with you Adam, but I think Rolfes post was for those who may not know the difference........I realised this after.

If the dog gives a positive mark, you wouldnt want it dropping in by mistake now would you ;)

it can be very hit and miss especially for lesser experienced people to understand the difference between womble setts and foxes,,the ONLY ONLY wat to tell is to look right around the main enterance ,there somewhere is a tree,on that tree there will be a post box so just have a quick peek inside at the name on the letter,

if it says dear mr badger then im afraid you need to go somewhere else

if however it says..........for the attention of basil brush then hey realease the hounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :icon_eek:

:clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper: I like it.........made me smile.

no you wouldnt. see what you mean about the confusion though as i am finding it hard with this new format of the forum

Dont care if i come across as a clever c**t 'cos i am but there is more to verifying a place than the shape of the hole or indeed bedding ,which ,just for the record is not changed nightly at all .Old badger settes will have remains of bedding outside which is only an indicator that it was ONCE an active sette .Fresh bedding is a sure indicator of currant use which in conjunction with pad marks in and out can be taken as gospel and will land you in the shit if caught with a dog in and digging .However ,the law in its present rediculous form states that anywhere a badger lives ,however temporary is deemed a badger dwelling .This applies to bales ,drains and any earth that happens to hold one but doesnt show any outward signs of use .In a period of rain ,it is very difficult to establish ownership of a hole without a good fox marking dog .

To stay completely within the law you need to look around the earth for other signs before you enter a terrier and these are .

Well worn paths to and from each hole and one or two paths leading away to the pastures .

Latrines ,pits dug by the badgers to deficate in -can be on the earth or to the side of a path nearby .

Scratches on trees ,vertical, usually elder but any tree that grows along a pathway .

Prints -Every terrier man should make himself aware of both fox and badger prints before entering a dog .

A descent size ,fresh spoil heap is a good indicator of currant use .
