whippet advice

i have just bought 2 ferrets and want to branch from shooting to ferreting aswel could one of ye recommend a suitable dog . i had my eye on whippets or maybe whippet lurcher could ye recommend some crosses. i am also open to grey crosses whatever ye think suitable for starting out with running dogs. i do have experience with dogs gun dogs , jrt and patts but new to the running dogs need some guidance please post whatever ye think.

your certainly not going to go wrong with whippet , weather its pure bred or whippet x . i.e bedlington whippet , i opted for 3/4 bred whippet 1/4 bedlington , she was 18'' to shoulder , amazing bitch she was .. the whippet / whippet x is the ideal ferreting dog IMO ....

 

 

thanks for the advice but i am finding it hard to find men in ireland with this sort of dog at least in my area.the lads are sound and will give advice on shooting and terrer work but the area doesnt have a strong lurcher tradition. but thanks anyway i'll keep looking thanks for putting me in the right direction i'll propably wait and see at the national fair see can i get my hands on something

its all about your preferance , and ground you will be ferreting , good luck with whatever you decide

being srious you would be better getting something that is an allrounder, as what happens if you see bigger qaurry or testing qaurry i know guys from ireland who have decent dogs ,but if its just rabbiting get a good line bred collie greyhound or something a long that line get a sensible type of lurcher dont get a pure breed for rough ground as they cost a lot more than a cross will, for catching just rabbs most wel bred meduim lurcher will do fech there a man in the midland who breeds non worker to non worker the can catch a rabbit , for ferreting in cold days and if you do alot of rabbiting get a dog with a good coat like a beardie collie cross greyhound ,or if your afair weather hunter a short coated dog wil do . spend a bit time work your budget and get dogs of genuine hunting guys who can show you there dog working or at least pics vids etc all the best

a whippet will give you good sport but are prone to knocking up on rough ground.

ive not had whippet yet but if regards getting injured like greyhound i wouldnt bother

i do my fair share of ferreting and alot of that can be on some tuff ground my colliex

is a year old never suffered with any injurys and copes with different ground well

and he has been working along with the ferret since 5 months and nice to watch one side

of a set while u no you have a good dog working the other my dog may be big but certainly

making the allrounder i bought him for .good luck in your choice of dog but i would think hard

on breed as u will want to do more than ferret when u get the bug lol ive been their .
