Tail Guards

SPAR

Recommended Posts

Like this you mean spar? this one here must be at least around 10 years old and seen better days! but X Ray paper was always the order of the day for many years. they need to be contoured with the shape if the birds tail at the quil! if not it nips the quils together crossing the the tips, it must also be uncomfortable for the bird...

This one has leather which is pushed over the tail bell but in the past I have used a square of car Inner tube with a cross cut in the middle to pop over the bell....

How did you shape it Jasper I got the old woman's iron out seen as it was an old one and brought her a new one :whistling:

I bet she loved you mate :clapper:.

A old Falconer showed me his tail Guard and loaned me his Templates! they was basically the size to cover a Finn male and Finn female, obviousley you just trim them to fit others. I cut my own templates out of card and marked where the folds should be, I then cut the shape out of the X Ray paper and marked the folds, its a bugger to bend but if you get a tsable with a good sharp edge you'll soon bend a edge on it and folder it further flat on the table...

One word of warning! the X Ray paper needs washing with a scourer and warm water as it has a coating, if you don't do this when you stick the Velcro on it will keep peeling off....

If you want some X ray paper and the Templates to copy remind me when you come round next.....
