Full moon lamping

We went lamping again last night.

Well if it’s Easter it’s got to be a full moon, apparently that’s how it’s worked out, and that’s why it’s so early this year, it’s the earliest Easter since 1913.

Luckily for us it was blowing a gale mixed in with squally showers, although the showers were a bit heavy for my liking.

I set off to my mates on the motorway, the traffic was really heavy, I’ve never seen it so heavy at 9pm. 40mph in the outside lane, but at least it was moving

 

We watched a video about salukis, while eating burgers from the local takeout, my mate’s lad ate enough to choke a donkey. Well he does have to carry all the rabbits!

 

It really was windy, and there was tree branches scattered along the roads. We parked up in the farm gateway, 12.15am, and then onto the field, good dog, old dog, rough haired pup, me, my mate, and son. We’ve got two nine month old pups, rough and smooth bitches, both bred from the good dog and my mates bitch, the bitches single handed hare tally runs into the hundreds, and that’s daytime!

 

The good dog nailed a rabbit straight away, which was absolutely flying on the short grass. We pressed on up and down the small hills and valleys, the good dog caught another two, and then the wind suddenly got stronger and next minute we were in a sleet storm. The driving sleet felt like needles hitting the one inch of exposed flesh on the back of my neck. We made a beeline for the van and just about made it before the worst of it.

 

The sleet stopped after a few minutes and we drove further up the lane, parked up, and walked up the hill on the other side into a big grass field. The good dog caught another three, and I slipped the old dog on one and he threw himself on his side to grab it, but unlike the old days he doesn’t seem to have the timing anymore and missed it.. We got the rough pup on couple but they were moving like bullets on the short grass, so we slipped her in on one with the good dog.

 

We made our way back towards the van, the good dog nailed another two, and we walked along the track back to the motor. We got to the road, but it wasn’t right. Somehow we had gone down the wrong track and come out in the wrong place. My mate shone the lamp into the field across the road and spotted two rabbits. The next minute the good dog was carrying one back. We decided, if we walked across these fields we’ll come to the van, but it was not to be. We were lost!

There was nothing else to do but go back exactly the same way we’d come, up hill and down dale. It’s surprising what you can remember when you need to, a cattle trough, a strange looking tree stump, a stubble field. The moon was shining through now, lighting everything up like a low power fluorescent. We made it back to the van, 3.30am with another seven rabbits, plus three, ten altogether, all caught by the good dog. Not bad for a full moon night

 

A strange thing. One rabbit was exactly the same colour as a hare, in fact in our numb early morning state, it took us a minute to decide whether or not it was a leveret or rabbit.

i went early doors thought id give dog bit of exersice and no what u mean regards fluresent light from moon lol i managed a couple not bad for full moon but not many about so was happy ..and that rabbit last week i had exactly the same like a fawny red ive never come accross one before and i didnt no what it was at first hare or rabbit must be an outbreak lol funny coulerd rabbits lol

WELL DONE MATE I HAD A RABBIT I COULD NOT decide weather or not it was a leveret or rabbit THE OTHER NIGHT BUT WHEN I SKIN IT IT WAS A RABBIT HE WAS BIGER THEN THE OTHER RABBIT'S AS WELL

took the black bitch out last night lamping . that my son brought of you last year samet sam, well pleased with her she tracked a fallow that was shot. she's going really well. just finished butchering it for the freezer.
