My mate bred a litter of wheaten greyhounds a year or two back, he kept three back but one of them unfortunatley died. THe two dogs he has at the moment are the bees knees and have took all quarry with ease on plenty of occasions. He also owns the father, in my opinion would give most a dog in this country a good run for there money, with drawing in mind. i myself have a young bullcross pup at the moment which is coming on well.

As to a lot more bull crosses not making the grade compared to wheaten crosses, i think its just the sheer number of bullcrosses out there compared to the wheaten crosses. Theres good and bad in every breed of lurcher, some excell at a chosen quarry where others wont.

Well that's my pennys worth

rob are you saying the bull x s you have seen or owned tended to be fighters if not taken out alone ?

As a rule, yes, and tended to be even worse with other bull x's that were with other mates,,,

but this is from my very very limited experience!

I was more trying to get at the dogs going into the mix in the first place,,

I have owned one or two Stafford's in the past and each tends different the main reason for this is the trait that line was looking to try keep!

all the best rob,

my £0.02p worth,i had the wheatons back in the 1980s,when the best ones had pitbull blood added to them,to put the fire back in there bellys,in the trials in ireland, the staffs was making a better showing then the wheatons, the wheatons are ok as foxs dogs, but so are bedlingtons, deerhounds and collie crosses, but i would say that for the stuff thats bites back,be it drawing or out right killing the bullcross is king,,,,, the few i have seen where no match for a good bullcross,,,,,the wheatons are just the next cross to be cashed in on as a peddlers dog imho,,, :good:

Think you could be right any dog where demand out strips supply will rise in price! and that may attract peddlers?

I always thought that it was EBT that was added to the wheaten, Hack Town Jack? the dog did well at the trials then every one was crossing in bull blood?

The straight wheaten then became unpopular and working examples got harder and harder to find.

personally I think it would have been better to just use selected wheaten. the other terriers they have tried to add game bull blood to have suffer as a result?

from my experience the straight wheaten is an easier dog to be around, and be around other dogs, a better nose, and all round hunter than Stafford.

got to say, I never experienced draw dogs doing there bit but I can assure you I have one b*stard of a Stafford here who will not let go of any thing so i can imagine that at 'point and shoot' rather than having to find he would be great.

my only point is;-

Pit bull's are bred to scrap, get a good one or a bad and it will scrap!

kc Stafford's are bred to scrap (a long time ago), get a "good" one and it will scrap! but for the main they are pet dogs

Stafford's originating from Ireland were breed for both scraping and hunting get the right line and you will have what you require.

(the rocky my dear Stafford line is first class little hunter, but can be very noisy when excited!!).

with all of the above you stand a poor chance of just getting something good and more of a chance of getting something breed purely for money.

I suppose the only real proof will be when a few more people get some good wheaten x's.

just my opinion,,, here to learn,

The thing that lets down a lot of wheaten crosses is that people are using k.c. show bred shite to produce the lurcher.Very few these days have the proper working wheaten lines,if only working lines were used it would be a different story. The show rubbish and the working wheaten have nothing in common.A good well bred wheaten cross is the match of any bull cross but like any cross not everything will make the grade.
