Marathon runners

Are there any people on here who’ve run a marathon?

If so, any advice for me? I decided last night that I’m going to run one this Saturday so any tips are welcome.

Also, has anyone ever run one with their lurcher? Were there any dramas?

Are any of Tom Riley’s sons on here?

This Saturday!??? Have you done much running before?......

If you are reasonably fit and of decent mental strength, the biggest thing is to pace yourself, not to kick the ass out of it. Hour lower back, hips thighs and calves will KILL!!!! But with good paceing, good warm up and cool down, your biggest problem will be the mind game of not giving up......

Yes I’ve done lots of running before but my longest distance was 20 miles on the streets but that was about 5 years ago. This is going to be a very gentle cross country affair.

What about fluid intake? Food before and during?

Depends on the exertion and air temperature; if its quite warm then you will be better diluting a standard isotonic energy drink like Lucozade with water, about 50/50, and just keep taking regular mouth full sips. If you wait say half an hour or longer and have bigger drinks you are more likely to suffer cramps and also not reap the benefit of maintaining your fluid levels.

Pre run, you want to build up some quality slow releasing carbs; not neceseraly the full "load" the pros talk about but a decent rice or pasta meal also some proteins too and some small oat bars to have a regular bite on during the run.

Feckin' hell Stabs, talk about leaving it to the last minute! Like has been said, lots of fluid, little and often...Food? Start carbo loading NOW, that is pasta, spuds, bananas and wholemeal bread etc. Light meal the night before and a stonking breakfast of muesli and honey on toast a couple of hours before. On the run, jelly babies are good for a quick fix, as are jaffa cakes, a handful of raisins, bananas again and after the run, take a good milkshake or some beef jerky (packed with protein) to help repair muscles etc. Failing that, take a bible with you and money for a taxi! :notworthy:

I'll be doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks (a 26 mile walk) in May and I'm starting now with gradual training. Good luck ya masochist.

Cheers for that C...it's not a case of me not doing it as there's no pressure on me.

It's going to be done and with a smile as it's my choice

So load up on carbs, plenty of fluids, some sort of glucose intake as I'm running and jerkey when I'm done.

No worries....I reckon I'm good for 3 hours or under :clapper:

QUALITY MATE....like people have said load up on cards and stretch like fek every day before and after the run,i used to drink flat coke its great for that suger rush, but its going to be a mental battle more than anything else, ive no doubt you could do it physically if youve ran before,,and judjing by your name you may have had a military background,,have you considered using a small day sack full of goodies ? I stick to fast walking now im doing a 26 mile hadrian hike in the next few month if anyone fancies it,,my last time was 6 hours 10mins cross country which is about 14 min miles ish,,we must be daft ha ha but i was the same as you ..just wanted to know if i could do it , youll find out a lot about yourself when youre mind is having a full scale war with your body but before you know it youll be slumped on the finish line :toast: ..the best of british luck mate
