mole trapper 1,703
Think it would be safe to assume that we have another pro pester amongst our ranks !!!! What do you use for bait in the lofts for squirrels ?, good pictures by the way. Regards MT. Quote Link to post
120-2 8
Hi mole trapper, I use peanut butter with sunflower seeds as bait. I have tried numerous bait mixes over the years but always end up using pb. OJ Quote Link to post
mole trapper 1,703
Well you sure look like you know how to use the tools to their full potential, most of those jobs i would have gone for live trapping on the ground and MK 6,s in the lofts first, but then i am never in a big rush to go up a ladder these days. heart of wales 19
very effective use of traps Quote Link to post
Rolfe 2
Well done on the use of the traps in awkward situations.......but it seems as if you have gone too a lot of hard work to achieve your goal. With the squirrel in the roof space, a cage inside the loft or out in the garden on it's access route will prove just as effective in trapping squirrels. All trapping methods should be as simple and as uncomplicated as possible (in my opinion) so why over complicate things? Besides, there is always the safety factor to take into consideration when working off ladders or at heights. That said, if all else fails then the methods you have used may be the only option left to you...........so i can see both sides of the situation. But Hey........well done with some novel setting arrangements and the pictures are great....! Best Regards Rolfe. Quote Link to post
120-2 8
Thanks for the replies, I will always choose the easiest method first as you can see there are loft pictures there but sometimes when all else fails this catches every time. There are a lot of people these days with loft conversions which makes it sometimes impossible to trap inside, and trapping outside although very successful you can end up catching half a dozen squirrels sometimes before you get the one you want. I bought my first 116 bodygrip from Magnum Trap when they first came on the list and watched Phil and Glen's video and realised then the potential these traps and the kania had. These days I tend to buy the Victor Conibear 120-2 direct from the states as I prefer the double spring and it is cheaper to buy box of 12 and ship it than to buy 12 116's here. OJ Quote Link to post

OJ - I know the Victor 120's and other such traps are cheaper elsewhere but they are not strictly approved by DEFRA for use in the UK - only the BMI Magnum is OTC Quote Link to post
john b 38
OTC I challenged on the same point but I think I was wrong According to this BASC information sheet The Conibear 120 is approved for squirrels, mink and various other animals. http://www.basc.org.uk/content/pestmammalspractice The 120 is also listed as a Mink trap in the DEFRA advice sheet http://www.defra.gov.uk/rds/publications/t...ical/tan_02.pdf However the online version of the 1995 Order doesn't seem to have it http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1995/Uksi_19952427_en_2.htm Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
OTCI challenged on the same point but I think I was wrong Hmm I will wind my neck in then - I am working with the Approval Orders and approved traps at the moment in my research - I think I have just become drowned in info . . . john b 38
Well here's the answer: Re: your query about the Victor Conibear 120-2 It is approved for the purpose of killing or taking grey quirrels, mink, rabbits, stoats, weasels, rats, mice and other small ground vermin and must be set in a natural or artifical tunnel which is suitable for the purpose. In 1997, the list of traps approved under the Spring Traps Approval Order 1995 was amended to include clones of types approved under the 1995 Order, which included the Victor Conibears. The list of traps approved was amended again in 2007, which included the following for mink against mink: Kania 2500 and Solway Spring Trap Mk6. Quote Link to post

John B, if the Spring Traps Approval Order allows "clones" of traps already approved, doesn't that loosley cover the foreign made pieces of shit that they sell on Ebay? Quote Link to post
john b 38
That was the reply from DEFRA and I'm waiting for them to find me a copy of the 1997 amendment on line (I can find '95 and '07 but not '97). I think the ref to 'clones' is as discussed here and the posts following it. I think 'clones' are different to 'copies' in that they are identical Quote Link to post
talpa 55
Good pics that will help some people widen their options of trap setting in different and difficult situations. Sorry for nit picking and not meant as a criticism, and it may be that you removed the tunnels from the Kania's for the pics. but those set on the tiles and on lapboard wall don't seem to have them? Spring traps approval for Kania 2000 and 2500 requires a tunnel to be used as with BG, Fenn etc. to keep you within the law. I think very few people are aware of this as they see the bait and trigger mechanism housing as being a tunnel, but you need to use an artificial or natural tunnel to prevent non target species being caught. I have put mine on boards which enable them to sit across joists in attics with a 20cm tunnel of 25x25 mesh set into board, holes in the board at each end enable fixing to sloping/vertical or uneven surfaces with grooves cut in the board to give your target easy grip, not that G/SQ need it. (The New DOC traps from NZ need to be used in tunnel supplied by manufacturer?? added cost!! they will not be cheap when you can get hold of them, but with a full width pan and baffles in the tunnel directing target animal onto the pan will make easy setting and humane kill by even the inept) Talpa Quote Link to post
