sorry to bother you again with a similar question. i have been training my dog now for the past week everyday and its been going ok. but there are times when she doesn't do what she is supposed to eg pick it up shake it and sit down and chew it. what do i do when this happens ,keep shouting NO FETCH like a maniac or is there a procedure for when the dog and i get it wrong.

she has been doing pretty well all considered

a mate of mine has a rescue springer,i had never seen a more timid and scared dog.he has persivered with it and it is now a good beating dog.it just takes time

Just take it slow with the dog she will pick it up don't feel the need to rush. Keep going back to the same thing until it's right. You need to choose what you want from your dog weather it is a picking up dog or just a beating dog. if it is a beating dog just do the minimum you need from him I.E you don't need all that hand signals rubbish just the pip left and the pip right will be enough make sure her recall is ok that's the main thing I concentrated on. Myy Springer had an excellent season. I got him Feb last year from a rescue center he had been beaten never walked was starved everything he was scared of leads sticks the lot. It can be done as long as you dont expect a field trial champ and only train what you need to train. He was ready in the september he never ran in never wanderd off no even pegged a bird. I'm not trying to sound big headed far from it i really have not got a clue about dog traing just what i have read out of a book.

thanks for all the advice i didnt expect such a reaction. i will give it all the time in the world and just keep going over the basics. i dream of the day i will be able to take her out shooting on me own and have her as company but i know its a long way off at the moment. will post with any break through s. she certainly is not the appropriate dog for the job but all i want out of her is to be able to basically retrieve what i shoot with my air rifle, no frills. thanks all for the help.

Got my current ESS as a 3yr old rescue dog, no training at all!

It took the best part of 2yrs, but I now have him stopping on the whistle, working to hand signals and retreiving perfectly.

It takes time but you'll get there.

Don't give up!
