horses and the law

Recommended Posts

Driving down a narrow but reasonably busy road this morning i had the misfortune to be stuck behind 2 horses with a stuck up female on each....side by side refusing to move meaning a 2 mile road took me near on 15 minutes to reach the end.....normally im happy to slow down, stop or whatever it takes to be polite.....having politely ( but relatively loudly ) asked them to move over or at the least go single file my reply was " why should we theres no law against it "......is there or not does anyone know ?......only because im getting too old for it did i manage to resist some sort of road/horse rage !.....is there any laws with horses and roads ? thought some of you country folk might know, thanks

Not sure if there is a law against it but they were definatley in the wrong! Occasionally riders will go two abreast if there is a young/nervous horse but I would have expected them to get off the road at the first available place and let you pass.

They just sound like total knob heads who give the rest of us other good horsey folk a bad name

I dont know about the actual law on it, but I have on occasions, not moved the horse to the side if I've felt there isn't enough room to pass, but have always trotted on, fast to find the nearest safe passing place

I think its a common sence situation, just sounds like those two women you had the misfortune to come across, have nothing between their lug ole's! :icon_eek:

Markbrick - I once tried carrying a shovel on my shoulder whilst riding, to move any shite the horse did, but it was very uncomfortable, and kept digging in my back. also, when I fell off, I ended up impailed on the thing..... :whistling:

Pick the shite up yourself and use it for your roses :laugh::laugh: Valuable stuff

Thats just plain inconsiderate behaviour!

When i'm out I trot on until I can find a suitable passing place. However some car drivers act like complete pricks when they see horses on the road too, it works both ways...

Thanks for the replies,i knew i was right all along :D ...next time i,ll shout " rule 53 " at them....

In fairness there probably wasnt anywhere sensible they could have pulled in,BUT had they simply gone single file there would have been more than enough room,i even thought of trying to go through the middle at one stage, but didnt want to clip them, not the animals thought i suppose ....couldnt even abuse them at the end of the road as they dissapeared into the forest :(

Why didn't you lean out of the motor and ask them to go single file so you could pass? I've had to do that on more than one occasion: they don't like it but it's only fair. I always slow right down for horses and in the old days you would always get a thankyou wave of the hand: not any more! There are just more and more ignorant unmannered people around, not just horsey people either.

The highway code IS NOT LAW its guidance and advice, you cant be prosecuted for failingt to adhere to teh highway code, so the section 53 is just guidance, it should be followed but its not enforceable and the riders didn't break any laws by not complying

Off to look it up properly in a LAW book now!
