New to Ferreting

I am getting two ferrets next week and am intending to use them to catch rabbits. What equipment do i need to buy, and where will it be cheapest? I've already got 10 nets, is that enough? Also, is it ok to feed them kitten food because thats what i've been told.

no disrespect mate, but have you read any books on ferrets yet, looked up ferret husbandry on a google search, it amazes me how someone can contemplate getting an animal without knowing how to generally care for them,

 

if your saying you want to start ferreting, then what do you think would be a good idea to do with the rabbits you catch

 

feed them to your ferrets prehaps, or untill that time, although I dont advise using it all the time, at least buy them some dry FERRET FOOD, it was made for them, not cats

 

Id suggest you get down the libary, first thing in the morning, and read it over the weekend

I do have a book, it only covers keeping them as a pet, not working them. In that book it says ferret food is best but kitten food is acceptable if specialist ferret food is not available, which in my case it isnt unless i get it delivered. If kitten food is not ok, then i guess I'll have to do just that. Being a semi-regular shooter, i have killed rabbits before, and know how to gut, butcher an cook them so thats where they'll be going.

Cat food isn't high enough in protein for ferrets and isn't really suitable for longer term (in an emergency it won't kill them but it doesn't have all the nutrients they require regularly). Use ferret food (most pet shops will order it in for you even if they don't stock it as standard). Supplement it with raw on the bone meat (and as said before, ideally the rabbits you catch).

where do you live ,this crops up to many times.....i carnt get ferret food unless its delivered

When I first read this reply I thought Dont cook them??? Then I realised you mean - don't cook them and give them to the ferrets How right you are stubby Cooked rabbit is great for us but not for your ferrets

Loads of pet shops stock or are willing to get you proper dry ferret food, that is much better than any kind of cat food, OK in the short term but not enough protein for long term feeding. Road kill is another reasonable replacement in short term. Hope this all helps.

I think he meant that the rabbits are his mate, not the ferrets lol.

and stubby, what happened to that thread i posted about a week ago about rabbit smoking? It's been taken down for no apparent reason, something to do with you perhaps?
