Barry, I couldn't disagree more. 223 all the way. The ammo is cheap and plentiful, and so are the rifles.

222 is somewhat pointless - the difference between it and 223 isn't large enough to make one safe where the other might not be, and 222 costs more to buy and is rarer. 223 does everything up to small deer, making it a very versatile calibre indeed.

I had one just didnt like it at all i found the 222 a far better gun yes the 223 can take a heavier bullet but i got rid of the 223 and got a 22.250 thats a great gun would never go by that

The .223 has so much more to offer. It's more popular so ammo is easy to find and cheap. It is slightly more powerful although not a lot. There's a vast range of rifles in .223.

As for .22-250, look at the ammo cost, shorter barrel life, added noise (although all of them are loud compared to a rimfire!) when compared to the .223. You get more range, but do you need it?

I've just been through the centrefire .22 thing myself. I went for .223. 300 yards is a long way, and it will fly that far just as easily as the others at a fraction of the cost

22-250 is better out to 300, it's pretty much flat that far so does have the edge over 223. BUT, it is louder, less barrel life, more expensive (4-5x the cost of 223) ammo, AND you can't use it on lots of ranges. Hence, for me, 223 is the better bet.

But, if ALL you do is whack foxes at 200+ yards, it's the better calibre. It doesn't do roe deer legally (it has plenty of grunt, just like 223, shame the RSPCA didn't know that...) and it's a hell of a lot (both money and grunt) for a bunny rabbit.

ok

. use a .222 absolutely superb very accurate and ammo is no problem at least down my way .not a lot between 223 and 222

as for the 22.250 you gotta use this cal .no comparison to the other two cals and dont listen to the hype about noise yes the 22.250 is loader but most people fit a mod on it and theres no difference once a mod is fitted and as long as you dont go putting round after round and getting a hot barrel they will last a fair old while .

and lets be fair they are all great cals when you find the load they like and will do the job in hand .the thing is you will always get different views as people have the different cals you will be happy im sure with your choice.

try the tikka,s they are great guns and shoot very well and have a first class trigger that can be adjusted to suit very easily

good luck t3

Lucky sod! 22-250 would be a great roe calibre, certainly has the poke for it.

22/250 ammo here is the same as 223 ammo so i guess i will be ok :boogie: once i get mine.

as for 222 or 223 i would have the 223 more choice of rifles more choice of ammo.

hold value better to i would say. but they say 22 is a more accurate round out to 200 then 223

but if a rifle can group 1 inch at 100 yards which most can easy then it will be a dead fox

at the end of the day no matter what cal centrefire you have.

what i would say is there are some nice cheap 222 around at the minute which would be

a good buy. just make sure your local gunshop has the ammo in stock if you dont reload ;)

As asked .222 or .223...no question .223! Far bigger choice of ammo, far bigger choice of guns, far cheaper ammo, far better future proofed than .222!

22-250 was not asked, but it is flatter and harder hitting, fair choice of guns, ammo is nowhere near as cheap as 223 and nowhere near the choice. Well known for eating the barrels a bit quick!

.222 and .223 I see as similar but go for .223 every time!

22-250 I see as different to both!

Link to post

forget all the hype about barrel burning if your on the range and putting plenty through it then go for the two smaller calibres

other wise go for the 22.250 no comparrison as the poll showed

as said plenty of ammo around and once you buy a gun why sell it ?

so dont listen to people who critizise 22.250 top cal for foxing

good luck
