Please help me out! What the hell is this I was sent this by email and have not got a clue what it is can anyone else make anything of it?

I refer to previous correspondence you have had with Animal Health about the project undertaken by Nottingham University on behalf of the then Department of the Environment about DNA profiling in relation to birds of prey.

As a result of further investigation by colleagues in Defra, some additional documents have very recently come to light in relation to this project and which we thought had previously been destroyed. From this further information, it would appear that the project was undertaken in four phases as follows:-

Phase 1: The object of which was to establish the feasibility of methods to assess the variation among British birds of prey by the development of techniques to assay blood samples in identifying parentage. It specifically identified the screening of Peregrines, Kestrels and Sparrowhawks to establish variation.

Phase 2: Required sampling of a larger number of birds over a wider range of species with particular emphasis on British birds of prey. This phase included examining the feasibility of extracting DNA from feathers and membranes inside eggshells.

Phase 3: Was to produce a series of ‘single locus’ probes (SLP) of minisatellite DNA for Sparrowhawks, Goshawks, Peregrines, Gyr Falcons, Merlins and Red Kites.

Phase 4: Was to complete the production of a series of SLPs for Peregrines and Merlins and to produce a series of SLPs for Golden Eagles; and to establish protocols for their use in forensic analysis.

And from the papers we have been given, I can now tell you that the costs for the project was as follows:-

Phase 1 = £8,200.00

Phase 2 = £17,482.24

Phase 3 = £37,136.67

Phase 4 = £38,567.00

Total: = £101,385.91

I hope this goes some way to answering some of your questions we were previously been unable to answer?

Yours sincerely
