6 18 40 or 6 18 50?

All being equal, in principle, always go for the best light transmission!

was thinking of a good quality leopold scope,do you think one of there 40obj would transmit good light

i use a fixed power 6-42 smidt bender 30mm tube on my 223..do 200 yard rabbits with ease, 95% of my shooting is at night...

yes 50 does, have a look at other shooters scopes, or all of the scopes in the shop before you buy. Spend as much as you can afford on your scope, it's as important as the gun.

As a general rule and like for like a 50mm MAY give you a wider field of view, this is not always the case and will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, ie a S&B XXXX 40 may give you a wider field of view than a ***** 50mm. It will depend on the internal lens arrangement!

Also be very careful about light transmission, "SOME" 40mm optics can be much better quality and give better light transmission than some "cheap" 50mm, just as some 25mm/1" tubes can be better than "SOME" 30mm.

However, as a general rule the bigger the objective lens and the bigger the tube the better light transmission...but be careful, it doesn't always work that way!

it seems to be that if i pay the money for a good quality scope,40 or50 obj will perform equally well just seems to be athing of personal taste.Would that be a fair statement to make?

If you are happy with the light transmission of the 40mm, go for that. This is because the closer your line of sight is to the line of travel of the bullet, the less variation you will get in POI at different ranges. (This is why the new leupold has a cut away in the bottom.)

We could go on forever with this one, but the above just about sums it up...if you are happy with what you can see through it then , job done!

I have a Leupold 3-9x40 and it pulls in nearly the same light as my 8x56 Schmidt&Bender up to 6x mag. As said above though, get the 50 anyway. All things being equal, it will give you a few more minutes without the lamp at dusk so could be the decider between going home empty handed or with some bunnies. I only got the 3-9x40 because it was going really cheap
