Guest sportsman
Anyone out there have an opinion on which one makes the best workers and why? I have my own opinions on this and was wondering what yours were! This is to those of you that hunt with hounds, knowing that some hunts take out bitch packs and also mixed packs. Also to those of you who work your own dogs! Lurchers, Terriers or any other types! Do you find them better to handle in kennels? Better on different types of quarry etc etc? Or do you think it makes no difference at all? Quote Link to post
Guest CharlieC
I like dogs and bitches, dont have a preference for either really, theres good and bad in both sexes. From a purely commercial point of view some people regard bitches as being of more value, which is why you sometimes see bitches priced higher than dogs, but then a bitch only has a limited reproductive lifespan as some bitches dont have their first season until they are 2-3 and its not a good idea to breed over the age of 6-7. A dog on the other hand is usually viable from a breeding point of view, for much longer and can pass his genes on to far more offspring than a bitch. Its all down to individual preference really. Guest reload
Interesting Topic.......Personally I prefer bitches as they quite often seem better natural hunters, dogs can be more lazy, just my tupence worth. But there good and bad in both Quote Link to post
Guest Duzabit
They say ''a bitch will work for you'' But ''a dog will work for him self'' don't know how true this is. Duz Quote Link to post
forest of dean redneck 11,637
i find dogs harder around house/kennel.i will only have 1 male on my property.bitches pack better together dont fight so much apart from terriers. but i find bitches a pain when in season whining and trying to escape.but all my male dogs i have had always want to fight all the time.but this has come in handy when someone tried to entice my dog away from me with another dog. :realmad: as for working they either try or dont no matter what sex. chartpolski 23,995
Over the years I've had dogs and bitches, at the moment I have two bitches, one spayed before I got her and the other just a pup. the only difference is obviously you can't work the bitches during their season, apart from that I have never seen any difference in trainabillity or workabillity between dogs and bitches. Cheers. Quote Link to post
Guest dondog
I prefer dogs I find them less moody and more consistent. Bitches on a good day can be the best but the next they don't seem interested at all. A bit like a women every man knows how moody they are and you never know how they are going to be today or the next day. :realmad: In the racing world bitches tend to make better stayers especially marathon eight bend races up to over 1000 Meter ,dogs tend to make better sprinters . The derby is usually won by a fast starting dog. Some say bitches are more determined than dogs and that's why they are better stayers. I think it is more simple than that humans sprinters are big powerful well built runners, like a big greyhound dog ,long distance runners and middle distance runners are a lot skinnier like a little skinny frail looking greyhound bitch they carry less weight like a Saluki and we all know what they are like for stamina less bulk is easier to carry long distances. I have always had dogs because of friends and relations bitches they have always put me off. I usually have two dogs at a time and I have never had problems with them fighting ,but I know of lots of people who have nasty bitches that have been a pain for fighting with their other dogs and bitches, in some extreme cases even killing or seriously harming dogs they have lived with all their lives and usually with no warning they snap for some reason. Also bitches are more likely to be jealous with their owner I find. But like everything different people prefer different things ,I think it boils down to the temperament of the owner and what they can tolerate and what they consider important. Quote Link to post

Guest Dillon
i prefer dog lurchers....but for terriers i like my bitches... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Me too, I have a had more terrier bitches than dogs. With Lurchers I can only comment on the ones I have worked or seen as i certainly aint no Lurcherman, however I feel a Lurcher dog is better for the bigger game. Quote Link to post
