sleepingdog 0
Hello, I live in the Channel Islands, far away from terrier country. However my Husband and I rescued a mange ridden puppy just three weeks after losing our last beloved Boxer+Staff. The re-homing centre said she may be a Patterdale.... I remember we both caught each other's eye at that moment with a 'what's a Patterdale'? look. It wasn't long before we found out! We got her clear of mange after 18 months, and she has matured to a very healthy 'full on' bitch. She obviously wants to get them Rats and Rabbits. She is also obviously successful as she brings them home from the woods and hedgerows nearby. (Dead and Warm!) I just think it would be good for me to understand how to take her our ratting. I also need to get her under control, as the moment she is off the lead she bolts to the undergrowth, and is obviously searching for a kill. We do have a problem with vermin in certain places around the island, I think a bit of terrier control would be good fun and excercise for her. I must admit I find it satisfying when she gets them on our property. So here goes, I would like to know if any of you regular terrier men/boys/ and possibly girls can give me some advice. sleepingdog 0
Hello to you Chaps, and thanks Bushingboy, I guess it's a case of trial and error for me, and instinctive 'get em' for Tyke. My best friend's neighbour has created a rat problem for her, by feeding a nest of them under the shed in the garden like garden pets. I think the neighbour even has children... (People amaze me) Now they are getting into my friend's garage. I think we have to wait until the neighbour is on holiday... How do we get the rats out from under the shed without burning it down? Also we obviously wouldn't have permission to kill them on her property. I am gathering Rats have nocturnal habits from reading other posts. I take it 'Lamping' means going out in the dark with torches! However in the meantime I think we just have to accept Tyke won't come back until she is exhausted, or done.. 4-8 hours if we just let her out. so going somewhere she shows a lot of interest with her, and just giving her the opportunity to get on with it is probably the bes way of understanding how she works. (This sounds as though I need to get a lot fitter!) Thanks for your replies, I feel encouraged already. By the way, I am 'the wife', although forever a tomboy having grown up in a large family of boys, so I am used to 'tagging along' with sporting activities. Regards to all your terriers.
