Malt 379
Get yourself out with some experienced terriermen for a couple of seasons before you even think about getting a dog & doing it yourself. Then you'll have a pretty good idea about which dog to get. Quote Link to post

Get out, help out, observe and learn! Good luck Quote Link to post
scotch7/08 0
I know whats coming next. How the hell do you get in with the local terriermen....... That is an eternal question with todays laws, if you have the passion required for the job you will find the oppertunities. All the best from some one with an arm tied behind his back. damashaman 1
You won't get in with a local terrierman, especially if he works for a hunt! You will be treated like crap untill you do a great deal of arse licking and be a general dogs body for many years, and if you are a super creep you may just get on in that world. My advice to you is- get a good male patterdale, read a load of books whilst he's a pup, care for him accordingly, and JUST GO OUT AND GET STUCK IN YOUTH LIKE I HAD TO DO AND LEARN FOR YOURSELF! you will soon find out nobody will do anyhting for you in this game, heres a tip as well-all farmers and keepers need knocking out, they are greedy selfish and unwelcoming of strangers, you will be treated as bad as an anti, it's dog eat dog mate. Get yourself some permission by yourself (IF YOU CAN) and if you can't , lick gamekeepers and hunt terriermans arses and you may get on in this game. Quote Link to post

That is what i call priceless advice and deadly true but i would like to add if you are determined like a terrier then you will get somewhere eventually. DONT forget to brush youre teeth to get the shit out. Quote Link to post
Guest whitser
not always easy for a lad to get out with a terrier man, in fact it could be impossible some times. so the best thing you should do is read all you can and get as mush advise as you can via forums like this. then buy a well bred pup from working stock. then get all the tools and equipment for the job...collar and box, graft, digging spade, t-bar or ferretting bar. then when your pups if age get him out ratting and go from there. if its your first terrier a sounder rather then a hard dog would be better, so i'd go for a well bred russell or russell cross.
