Rolfe 2 Posted March 11, 2008 Report Share Posted March 11, 2008 Well fellow mole catchers i have surpassed myself this morning by beating my exsisting speed trapping record of 3 minutes.........in fact i beat it by a full 1 and a half minutes............and never used a trap. Let me explain I was called in to remove a single mole that had just started to encroach on to some rugby pitches. There was a single line of tumps (mole hills to the initiated) that ran on to the pitch. Selecting a point halfway along the run i dug out a square of turf to set the Talpex trap. I was clearing the furthest end hole with the mole spade, when the mole decided to make a dash back to his main tunnel system. He never made it further than my mole-dibber bar and paid the price for his stupidity. Obviously i had trapped him at the very end of this branch of his tunnel system and he was hell bent on making it back to his main working area. So this is my first mole without a trap this year........can anyone beat that? Now i could invoice the client for £3.50 as some would do on here if i charged per mole..........but i think £40.00 would be more realistic. ...that works out at about £20 a minute then for time spent on the ground. When the mound starts to move i always stick my dibber in but always miss! Fasest catch for me was i was setting duffus in a field, and i had set one at the edge of the area. I was just covering it with soil when it went off, i thought i had knocked it and set it off, but lo and behold a mole! It must have been trapped at the perimeter and tried to make a run for it when it went dark Got to be a world record Nobody was there to see and plenty dont believe me. Shame i had another umpteen to go. had a similar thing myself , set trap and stood up , bang , dead mole, had a load that i chased in ,mole working at the end of a line of hills and set a trap 6 ft away and then start thumping the ground at the last hill and they go in , once did my 4 cuts with the spade , flicked the turf out and the second cut had whopped it on the back and killed it Quote Link to post
mole trapper 1,693 Posted March 11, 2008 Report Share Posted March 11, 2008 Mate of mine who,s wood i stalk in asked me to pop over and get rid of a mole that was heaving in his orchard, while we were chatting it started heaving soil and i half heartedly stamped my heel into the hill, poor bugger was only about three inches down and i had him. It went some way towards redeeming myself for accidently letting a squirrel go out of one of the live catch traps he had set. Quote Link to post

It went some way towards redeeming myself for accidently letting a squirrel go out of one of the live catch traps he had set. dug out loads over the years one farmer was watching one day and said he wasn,t paying for that one cos i didn,t set a trap , i said , i,m a molecatcher and it don,t matter which way i catch em ,greedy b*****d, i used to try to dig in and flick the bugger out but catch rate was crap , so i started healing them in and flattening them to the floor of the tunnels same as you done, give you that bit longer to get the spade to work ,still missed plenty mind many years ago i used to carry a folding 20 bore just to shoot any that were working Quote Link to post

HAS DONE THE JOB FOR A LONG TIME AND NO DOUBT HAS HAD MANY , MANY MORE CHANCES TO WITNESS THINGS SUCH AS THIS ............ THAN A GUY WHOS NOT FULL TIME ON THE MOLES ........... TODAY , I HAVE HAD A FEW MOLES IVE BEEN PROMISEING TO GET RID OF FOR A WHILE ,.... SET UP WENT BACK THREE HOURS LATER AND HAD 7 FROM 7 SETS OF HILLS ........ THE FASTEST ? ............. WELL A MATE WHOS SMALL GARDEN BACKS ONTO FIELDS WAS HAVING A BIT OF TROUBLE , I WENT OVER TO SET A FEW TRAPS , AS I WAS GETTING SHOWN THE HILLS I SAW THE MOLE MOVING IN THE VERY SHALLOW RUNS ..
