wag 13
i would just feed her up now mate, let her moult right out , if she is droping deck feathers you can fly her , if you cut her weight down now it could cause frett marks in her new feathers. which at some stage through the next flying season could cause the feathers to snap or damage them , then you will have to do some imping on her and it dont all ways work . just put her up now, then you can get her out early part of the season . but put plenty of good food into her not just D.O.C Quote Link to post

wag 13
that sounds great food , i also give mine hares , steak and other red meat, but it sounds like your giving her plenty if she is dropping feathers now well done . Quote Link to post
trappa 518
Id feed her up now. If shes only just dropped feathers then there wont be any chance of fret marks until the new ones are growing so you could carry on, but her dropping feathers basically means shes ready to moult. Like wag says, plenty of good stuff and she will benefit. One word of warning is feeding rats. The white ones that you buy do look a little like ferrets and i always avoided feeding them. I never wanted her to associate white creatures with food as i worked mine to albino ferrets. Quote Link to post
SPAR 2
I was always told to put a large bird like a HH up to about 6oz over there hunting weight as it quickens up the moult dont know how true it is as I just pull my FHH when she's finished. Going to see what impacted it has on her this year as Im going to fly her through. Edited March 11, 2008 by SPAR Quote Link to post
big will 0
I was always told to put a large bird like a HH up to about 6oz over there hunting weight as it quickens up the moult dont know how true it is as I just pull my FHH when she's finished. Going to see what impacted it has on her this year as Im going to fly her through. you won't do her any favours, carrying on, she won't be able to manage her body won't take it ,her feathers will be weak and brittle , fret mark etc....if she is'nt fed up ,my fhh started about 6 weeks ago and has'nt been out since, just been feeding her up on mainly qauil, few chicks ,beef ,hare, mice the advantage is that she will finish a lot early, so im out early every season, she is free and fit ,when most people are just pulling there birds out ,mine already doing it, hope this helps will Quote Link to post

I know we have all got our own opinion of things but what happens to people's birds when they fly them through the moult and keep them at hunting weight Quote Link to post

jasper65 6
The moult can be all but delayed by keeping your bird down to flying weight before the moult takes place! having said this if a bird starts to drop and you cut her down before her new feather/Feathers are penned then you'll get problems with the new feathers like mentioned earlier, its no different than when I have lost deck feathers on Goshawks in the past through crashing in cover or whatever! 99.9% of the time the new feather hasn't come down until the following moult and stayed missing through out the flying season.... Theres alot of techniques these days to speed moults up or moult birds out earley! But from a personal point of view If any of my birds had already started dropping feathers I wouldn't want to cut it again until its as good as completed the moult, but if I was flying a bird late into the spring/summer I would have had it down in condition to delay the moult well before... I have heard of people in the past flying HH's right through the moult at a high weight and the birds has dropped feathers as Normal due to its high condition, also aparantly some of the Display Imprint Falcons will moult while being flown....
