Firstly Blue, If you're allowed to ring pigs noses over there, do it, it will make your choice of fencing alot easier. They wont dig half so much or trash "nice looking" fencing. It depends on how big an area you have to fence her in, as to weather she's gonna want to escape or not, which in turn will determine the sort of fencing you should use. If I was you, I'd post and rail for purley aesthetic reasons, but then back that up subtley with a run or two of plain electric wire about 8 inches off the ground and then 16 inches, then raise it a bit as the girl gets bigger. You usually find that once they have had a tingle or two off the wire, they respect it quite quickly!! Quote Link to post Share on other sites
BlueCoyote 0 Posted March 10, 2008 Author Report Share Posted March 10, 2008 not sure what you mean by the ring, is that like they do with bulls? and yes i would have to put up rails or another fence just to protect every outside else from the electric wire. the man we got the pig from was keeping two sows, a bunch of piglets and a huge boar contained with just a couple strands of wire. if my kids were older i wouldnt have a problem with doing it his way because it would be cheapest. i'm just no fan of electric wire when kids are around my idea was to get a bunch of wooden pallets to build the pen with. i've built dog kennels that way before. nice and shady for them in there and pallets dont cost a thing. the only problem there is if a large pig wanted to they could just lift it up and tip it over.... Without the strand, there aint nothin' that'd stop 'em if they had a mind to wander. As for the kids, I have 3 girls, and we've all been on the receiving end of the fence. It is a shock, but only that. There are no lasting effects and after a couple of goes you just give it a wide berth. My uncle has persevered without electric for ages, and every fence he has ever built has been destroyed by his sow, Madaleine. But you may be lucky. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
BlueCoyote 0 Posted March 17, 2008 Author Report Share Posted March 17, 2008 no i'm not lucky at all lol i am a mom.. always going to worry about my boys getting hurt it makes sense to use electric and we'll have to to that eventually i'm sure. i was looking at an old book recently and saw a picture of a pig pen from Holland (i think) was like a giant dog house with blocks instead of fence wire or rails... which is something i would like to build.. i think. BlueCoyote 0 Posted March 20, 2008 Author Report Share Posted March 20, 2008 Kris thanks i'm stoked to have all this too - my husband isnt.... spoiled rotten military kid and beach brat that he is. of course i have a way with him so i get what ever i want most of the time! as for the pig, WELL..... started out as meat for the freezer but as i did more research i am leaning towards breeding and raising a few porkers off her. they have decent sized litters, we have the space for it... and since the people next door shared a recently butchered cow and pig with us we'll probably return the favour some day as well as share with other family members and sell any others we have plus keep one for our own freezer. of course i am getting ahead of myself.... she's only been here since January lol hardly knee high to me, and i'm short! as for being pet .... hmm well.... i dont wanna go there. i want her to be tamed where i can move her from one spot to another.. but i dont want her thinking its ok to climb into the truck bed or hang out on our doorsteps. i have a funny feeling the bulldogs wouldnt tolerate it and she doesnt tolerate any dog anyway. i used to know a pot belly pig that would roam around with a pack of dogs, but not my pig. she has it in for the canine species! kreet 0 Posted March 21, 2008 Report Share Posted March 21, 2008 sounds like a good idea thats exactly what i would do take a litter of her and use them for meat as you say more meat means a better feast plus will fill the hole in the pocket for 5 mins aswell . im still working on my better half but at the moment im aloud some veg bed's till we move then im allowed some chickens if i had my way it would be like a farm lol Quote Link to post Share on other sites
BlueCoyote 0 Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Share Posted March 22, 2008 lol i liked that comment "Fill the hole in the pocket for five minutes" ... isnt that usually how it goes? my husband says almost every day how he'd rather have one dog, one cat, and no other animals... instead we have three dogs.. and still one cat(we had three though!), ducks, the pig, several rabbits, goats, chickens etc and so on.... but like i said..... i usually get what i want in the end. not that he's p*ssy-whipped or anything.. i just dont ask his permission!! BlueCoyote 0 Posted March 25, 2008 Author Report Share Posted March 25, 2008 what IS it with people thinking you should have only ONE dog?!?! my husband is the same. so what if he grew up with just one dog and it lived to be 17... i dont care. i grew up with several dogs all at once and they all lived to be old too. yes he grumbles almost daily about all these animals. he just doesnt want to do the work involved but i dont hear him complaining when i'm making his breakfast with fresh eggs and veggies we grew ourselves. i also dont hear him complaining when his tools and work space isnt invaded by thieves.. i feel like the Little Red Hen sometimes..... kreet 0 Posted March 25, 2008 Report Share Posted March 25, 2008 haha am the same after all these posts i couldnt wait till we moved i got one of those mini greenhouses and got some salads and veggies started half the gardens dug over for an earlycrop before we go aswell sarah's none too happy as she is the same she works all day but gets home and the hole house has to be done her tea on the table n kids dinnerd and bedded . dont think she will complain when she gets the taste for her own home grown lol .
