dogs-n-natives 1,182
Can anyone tell me what bull blood brings to a lurcher that another breed doesn,t. I am just wondering why anyone would use bull blood as opposed to say bedlington or wheaten or whatever. I am by no means an expert on bull cross dogs but i have owned one he was bred 3/4 greyhound - 1/4 bull on both sides and was a nice looking dog of about 26". However he was just not fast enough and lacked wind and that has been my experience of all the bull bred lurchers i have seen to date. so what is the attraction to them?? because they do seem quite popular. If they are bred say for larger quarry then surely the saluki cross is more than capable and more versatile. I look forward to hear from the many fans of this cross what they think gives this particular type an advantage over certain other types/crosses. that 3/4 bred dog wasn't fast enough, they are usually to fast for what i want (over runnning) i prefer bit more bull in them i suppose speed is everything to some people if thats the case pure grey bull aids prey drive, gameness, tenacity, and there bite power and muscle mass seems to rub of on any dog there bred to, depends what you want they are good all rounders ,but have there faults as any lurcher does My half bred bull greyhound is well fast enough for what I use him for, he has a great nose, he marks 100%, he wasn't to hard to train, dead game. He's mainly a lamping dog but he does a bit of everything. He's my first and only lurcher, so I cant compare, but he has made such an impression on me and the people I hunt with and has added so much to my pack that I wouldnt have any other cross. But maybe in the future a pure whippet for rabbiting??? Quote Link to post
bird 9,935
Well ive had two bullxs, = 3/8bull 5/8grey , 1/4bull 3/4grey. Both were good dogs They caught small game and big game . The two never made old bones They got smashed up , and were finished at 4 years old . I had a colliex grey , he got smashed up at 17months old, ive spoke these dogs on the other site. Ive had lurchers 25+years, and bullxs are good dogs, but i do think you can get other xs just as good. Ive gone back to colliex greys now, a mate of mine had a 1xcollie grey, [farm bred] 24ins 48lb. This dog would tackle any thing :whistling it was as hard as nails . There is good and rubbish in all lurcher xs. BIRD Quote Link to post
collie/grey 238
Personally, i own 1 bull x, she is my first lurcher of this breeding, as a pup she was very easy to train and quick to learn, she has endless stamina, guts and determination. This was her first season and she picked up on her job with ease, after 3 sessions she was like a dog of 6 years old. She's 3/4 grey 1/4 bull. Im not saying she's the best dog on the planet but she has done me proud so far. Bull x's are like marmite, love em or hate em. Quote Link to post

DUCKWING 302
WELL IAN , IVE HAD AS " WELL BRED " SALUKI LURCHERS AS CAN BE GOT FOR A LOOOOOONNG TIME , FOR HARES ON LARGE FIELDS DAYTIME THEY ARE THE ULTIMATE ..... NO DOUBT ABOUT IT ...AND YOU SEEM TO BE LOOKING AT IT FROM THIS POINT OF VIEW ? OVER THE MANY YRS.... IVE WALKED OUT WITH LADS WHOM EXCELLED IN THAT GAME AND THEIR HOUNDS , BUT IN NO WAY WOULD I CONSIDER THEM TO BE AS GOOD FOR OTHER ASPECTS OF WHATS EXPECTED OF A MODERN DAY LURCHER , NOPE ..... THEY ARE THE SPECIALISTS WHERE AS THE BULL CROSS WILL FIT THE DIFFERING ROLES MORE COMFORTABLY FOR JOBS OTHER THAN COURSING ...... IF I WAS BUYING / BREEDING A HEAVILY SALUKI BLOODED PUP CERTAINLY WOULDNT BE MY CHOICE WHEATONS ? IVE SEEN WHEATONS WORK AND WAS QUITE IMPRESSED ......... HOWEVER KNOWING THE LINEAGE OF THE WHEATON DOGS USED HOW COULD THEY BE SPLIT FROM BULL CROSSES AS THE CONTAINED THAT MUCH BULL BLOOD ! BEDLINGTONS ? WELL .... IVE SEEN HUNDREDS WORK..... . BOTH STRAIGHT CROSSES AND BEDDY HYBRIDS .......... PERSONALLY IVE NEVER SEEN A STRAIGHT BEDLINGTON CROSS I WAS IMPRESSED WITH YOU SEE , IMO ....... VERY FEW HALF CROSS OF ANY NON SIGHT HOUND BREED ARE FAST ENOUGH TO BE CLASSED AS A DECENT ANIMAL ........ BUT THE BRAIN MAKES UP FOR THAT IN THEIR CATCH RATE ...... PERSONALLY .......... AS IVE SAID BEFORE .......... IVE GOT A VERY LIGHT BUILT FIRST CROSS BULL X GREYHOUND ...... AND IAM STARTING TO ENJOY MY HUNTING ONCE AGAIN , YES SHES GOT FAULTS ....... BUT SHES VERY ITELLIGENT ,.......... HAS A DECENT NOSE ,........... A FANTASTIC MOUTH ON HER.......... AND............ GIVES 100 % ... A DECENT LITTLE BITCH TO TAKE FERRETING AND CAPABLE OF MUCH , MUCH MORE ..... IN SHORT A PLEASURE TO OWN . TO BE HONEST , ....... I THINK OVER THE YRS I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH SOME REAL ANIMALS ...... BRED DOWN FROM THE BEST COURSING LINES , THEY HAVE BEEN TOP CLASS DAY TIME HARE CATCHERS AND CAPABLE OF VERY ENERGY SAPING LONG NIGHTS ON THE LAMP , ......... HOWEVER .......... I DONT THINK ANY OF THEM PARAGONS HAVE BEEN AS VERSATILE AS THIS BULL CROSS OR HAVE HAD A BETTER MOUTH , SOME OLD PICTURES OF THE PEGGY SUE BITCH ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post
damashaman 1
I AGREE WITH SWAMPY AND DUCKWINGThe biggest problem I see with "bull" crosses, here is within the bull itself. With greyhound and bull crosses, the greyhound is in no question as of paternity, but the bull these days in any buggers guess. There are so many "Types" out there, many many dogs with poor deluded owners honestly wishing that they had a genuine bona fide APBT when all they really have is a big old lump of rubbish that seems like a pitbull in there vivid imagination! I have had the pleasure of seeing a genuine bona fide APBT/greyhound dog grow up, and work and do exeptionally well on every convievable quarry. Good, tall not overbuilt pits are very ,very difficult to come by, it's the generic "type" dogs in general that are used in the U.K. too heavy/short/stocky staffy cross type that go into producing these dogs, and that is the reason for poor examples. (In a word, curs) A good genuine tall, rangy game bred animal in my opinion is way, way more tallented in every way than say a collie or even a wheatan. They are vigerous and determind sprinters/jumpers with hard bites, unbeaten pain tollerance, zest, spirit etc etc and as for stamina, the real deal is bottomless!! Haven't you ever wondered where these people are getting there "genuine" first crosses from before, even in the 90's after the dda they were common, impossibly common? The genuine dogs are also without question very smart and also easy to train. Execute caveat emptor when going for genuine pit/greyhounds. having said that these days, who is ever going to admit to owning the real thing? Edited March 10, 2008 by damashaman Quote Link to post
damashaman 1
here are a few piks of my dog pup he's out the black bitch i used to own to my cousins old dog this was his last litter from the old boy the guy who had this dog basicly moved away and left him so i had to take him back he has turned out a decent dog iv taken a good few pounds of him as he was like a barel when i took these ones the other week so ill get a few upto date ones up at the weekend . and heres a perfect example in "staff pup" on the bull breeds page......very sorry lads, but it has never been a staff or a pit either! ianm 2,594
Well it would seem the general concensus is that the bull brings gameness, intelligence and stamina. I must have been unlucky in the one i had and the others i have seen. Duckwing, no i am not looking at this purely from a daytime, hare, big field scenario far from it. The field sizes where i live vary enormously from 2 or 3 acres to one which is 100 acres but most common are between 20 to 40. However i do need a very fast dog which can get there and do something with my chosen quarry before it dissapears, even with the lamp. Last year i did try another bull cross, she was bred 7/8 greyhound 1/8 bull and i got her at 14 months old. Now this little bitch hadn,t had the best start in life however i was absolutely stunned when she point blank refused to even chase. Igave her away as a pet eventually. this is her. I have no doubt there are some very good bull cross dogs about, the fact that quite a few very good dog men own them tells me this is so. But because of what i have seen i would be reluctant to try the cross again. Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
WELL IAN , TO BE HONEST .......... I DONT KNOW HOW YER BULL CROSS WAS BRED ....... AND ,........... WITH ONLY 1/8th BULL IN HER COMPARED TO 7/8th GREYHOUND .... PERSONALLY I WOULDNT CONDEM THE VERY SLIGHT BULL INFLUANCE IN HER I ONLY HAVE PUPS AND NEVER HAVE HAD A SAPLING OR ADULT WHICH I HAVENT BROUGHT ON BY MYSELF ....... THIS BEING SO ... I KNEW THE BREEDING OF THE BULL SIDE IN MY BITCH VERY WELL ....... AS I DID THE GREYHOUND SIDE , OVER THE YRS I HAVE SEEN HUNDREDS OF CRAP BRED LURCHERS BRED BY " SO AND SO " FROM THE NEAREST DOG OF THE BREED WANTED WHEATHER ANY GOOD OR NOT ! .........OF ALL TYPES FROM SALUKI CROSSES WITH NO LUNGS OR MOUTH .. TO SO - CALLED BULL CROSSES THAT WERE DOWN FROM CURS ,............. ITS ALL IN THE BREEDING ITS AN OLD SAYING BUT A TRUE ONE ............... THE APPLE DOESNT FALL FAR FROM THE TREE ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post
ianm 2,594
Duckwing, i know exactly what you mean rearing your own pups, i allways do the same but i just thought i would give the little bitch a try. Speaking of running your own pups on these are mine 91/2 months old i will be running them next winter. Quote Link to post
