James@Scarborough 0
When you've got the finished shape, use fine wet & dry 200 grade then 400 grade to get a finish like glass. Oil with danish oil at least 8 coats with plenty of time to dry in between. smooth between coats with 400 grade wet & dry. Apply oil, wait 1 minute then wipe off excess before allowing to dry. After the final coat is dry buff to a soft sheen. Quote Link to post

blahblahblah 0
Just seen your post. If you want to get a purfect finish, sand down to the highest grade then wipe over with thinners, use a wall paper steamer to steam the wood for a few minutes then rub down with steel wire wool, repeat this until the wood is smooth straight after steaming. wipe down with thinners again then apply the finish of your choice Quote Link to post
sidesy 0
plenty of advice (google it) but the main thing is..it cant be rushed....all things have to be done in order and there are no short cuts at all...always rub with grain whatever you do otherwise its almost impossible to get the cross marks out of grain....its all about getting it smooth to touch, after basic shaping and sanding you have to spend hours using wire wool before sealing and applying finish...then dependant on oil or staining you will need to rub stock down again and again .....you seem to have a great shape of stock so now the elbow grease is required. if all else fails...you can paint it with something like plastikote although this will require a clean and oil free primer first..
