new to ferreting

thanks lads ,when are the kits bred how old are they when you buy young ones, as i want to socalise them with the kids very young so the ferrets look smallish to them rather than a big hob that would put the fear of god into them,also is a bigger enclosure better ie more space play things etc i dont want loads of ferrets but some of the farms i have really want the rabbits cleared as much as poss befor the crops are up each year and by the end of decenber all rabbits are lamp shy as i hammer them every other day or lose the permission.

so a couple of ferrets in the team sounds good to me bit of day time netting and lurcher work ideal

 

 

Kits are bred in the spring/summer you should be able to find them cheap or free in the next couple months. Kits are generally about 8weeks + before leaving the jill. Handle them Every single day as much as possible. Be prepared to teach them not to nip as its just a ferret thing, some never outgrow it but with patience and perseverance you will have a very well handled animal.

 

The other stuff i'll leave for the more experienced hunters in the group..

ive been ebay and various internet shops looking for the locater's etc i want one with 2 collers ands is it possible to run a terrier coller of the same locater any one?

i hope so, a very nice person on here has offered me up to look at there expectant ferret when the kits are due so hopfully she is pregnant and my set up will be ready in time

i think i will kay ive enjoyed when ive been took out by friends i took my little whip/grey.just a tad worried about losing somone elses ferrets

Thats always a concern, and will remain one as you become attached to your own. But a locator and collar( put it on tighter than you think it should be !) add a bit of reassurance.

Re. handling etc. the more you play with them when they are small the better. If they nip you when young, gently press your knuckle or whatever they have hold of into their mouth until they start to struggle to get away.

 

On a positive note, whistle exactly the same way every time you go to feed them. When they are out and you do that whistle they will come running.

Hi all, can't say enough about handling them loads. Nothing worse than chasing a fert up and down the hedgerow because it isn't used to being handled - wastes valuable hunting time. If they are hand tame they are easier to enter and to catch at the exit.

 

Another good book on general ferret husbandry is Sean Frain's 'The Pet Ferret Handbook'. Sean uses ferrets for hunting but has produced a book purely on the care and health of the animal and it is a good reference. Other than that forums are a massive wealth of knowledge.

 

Have now worked a couple of my ferrets twice (so not an expert on hunting with them) but have kept them for a few years (so slightly more knowledgeable about keeping them LoL). They are great creatures and very intelligent so when you sort out their housing make sure they are stimulated as the better they are kept the keener they are to play and hunting bunnies is play to them!

Very enjoyable bull,, you'll definitely get addicted, i would personally recommend that you keep an eye out for a working jill a couple of years old,you could get lucky, they get to know you right and quick if you handle them every day. getting a new kit now is well and good but it is recommended that you wait until their over a year old before taking them to work. its hard to wait a full year once youve got the bug!

Very enjoyable bull,, you'll definitely get addicted, i would personally recommend that you keep an eye out for a working jill a couple of years old,you could get lucky, they get to know you right and quick if you handle them every day. getting a new kit now is well and good but it is recommended that you wait until their over a year old before taking them to work. its hard to wait a full year once youve got the bug!

the guy who is lending me the ferrets has over 20 all very tame all worked for a shotgun shoot said see how iget on with them and he will pick a couple out for me couldnt belive it .

Thats a good head start for you lad, when they have been handled it makes it a bit easier, i got a big hob recently, over a year old and never handled, he was a bad child at the start, thankfully he has caught on. "Never bite the hand that feeds you" i would handle him every day now when m feeding him, if you do that you cant go far wrong.
