If you find you need to dig another hole, do so, but again wait until the dog has pushed the quarry as far as it can. Pound on the ground one more time before you dig; you want to avoid a third hole if you possibly can.

If you are up to the quarry, it's important to block off the back end of the pipe before you pull the dog in order to prevent the critter from bolting back into the rest of the sette as soon as the dog is clear. This can be accomplished by either collapsing the pipe or by blocking it with a shovel or posthole digger.

it can be totally possible in my oppinion to have to dig maybe two holes...i had to dig a few times a second hole when we were on badger hunts in germany with great dogs and if the den was from an earth with a high percentage of sand..sometimes if the dig took very long because of the depth the badger (if it is a strong big one) had the possibility to dig himself further in since the dog can not hold him in such an easy diggable earth forever..maybe brock moved half a meter and dug a "wall" between him and the dog and then it is normal to have to dig another one. the dog is then doing the rest of digging to the badger. with fox i personally had only to dig a second hole if the den became very narrow and the dog could not reach the quarry. i think it depends on the soil and the way the den is "build".

everyone has had to dig more then one hole before. it happens. if the dog and quarry move and settle else where then theres nothing you can do except start digging, and we've all been there.
