hi lads, just a few questions out of curiousity, id love to own a bird, but dont have any where near the time neded to spend with a bird  , when you fellas put your birds out on a perch in the morning do you leave it unattended? how long do you leave it out for? do you leave it out in wind and rain?

when a bird is in moult does this affect its flying? and how long does the moult last?

i have a wild sparrow hawk that hunts in my back garden and regulary kills the birds on top of my kennels, a pleasure to watch, thanks in advance for any replys

how long does the moult last?

How long is the piece of string :hmm: every bird is different, some moult quicker than others and some start earlier than others. I put my FHH down to moult last year on the 5th March and she didn't drop her first feather until 26th March. I pulled her out of moult on the 13th August so roughly 5 months it took her.

you cant watch a bird every second of the day but never leave it perched out if you are away from home and dont leave them out in the rain. the moult will noramlly last upto 6months but as already stated every bird is different.

i have just aquired a male harris hawk i used to fly a female, i am going to fly him through i wouldnt normally but as he is a young bird i want to get a bit of sport with him and get him used to my dog.

just be careful if flying though the moult as if you have a fether that isnt fully grown back and it gets snapped they will bleed.

if you do get a bird i would advise you to get a harris hawk as your first bird, they are the best beginner bird and have a very good temper. and will catch you a range of quarry.

best of luck if you decide to take on one.

i would love to own and fly a bird but , i have no where near enough time to spend with a bird, to have it manned properly. any spare time in winter is spent coursing and lamping, it wouldnt be fair on a bird to just be used when i had a spare hour, i only asked questions purely out of curiosity
