shooting cormorants

Recommended Posts

hello folks

I'v been walking round the local loch for the past few days of wich i am a member of the fishing syndicaite and cant help notice the number of cormorants i counted 14 this morning now i know that cormorants are protected under the wildlife and countryside act 1981 but i believe that under certain circimstances a licence can be granted to control there numbers, has anyone on here had a licence and if so what were the conditions of application ??

Ricky, there are strict guidelines from DEFRA concerning the shooting of Cormorants. I'm a named shooter on a couple of waters that have trouble with Cormorants. It goes something like this...Contact DEFRA with your complaint, seeking advice. And then something like the following will happen. The person/club having trouble with Cormorants must show their loses, fish and financial wise. They must show when and how many birds are arriving, who will be shooting, (up to six named I think according to DEFRA) etc. It goes on and on. A visit might be needed to look at the site from the landowners and from a safety point of view. English Nature have got involved in one water I shoot on. So the procedure is a little complicated but worth the effort if control is needed. There is a close season of course from April-August and the recommended form of control is along the lines of "shoot to scare" if you get my drift....deter them if you can!

Contact DEFRA for more thorough information as I'm only a named shooter and I'm writing from what I've been told in the past, things could have changed.
