loose dog 0
I've got a young bitch that will return to hand time and time again, in the back garden. Live quarry is a totally different thing to her, at the moment she hasnt made the link. Take it steady and let the dog get a bit older, good luck Quote Link to post
NIGHTSHADOW 3
Q, as a pup did he have to fight for his food from the other pups,Along time ago I had one that did this,we worked it out that she was in a kennal with her sister till she was 6 month old ,her sister was the stronger of the two, so she use to hide her food from the stonger bitch, this is what we think started it off, sorry to say, could take her out lamping,at the begining of the night she was fine but when she started to get tired , that was when she started to hide the rabbits, some night she was ok, other she would piss me off Quote Link to post

Ossie 11
he's still very young, i didn't do anything with Gyp until he turned 1, and i don't think you really know what you've got till the dog is 18 months old at least. it's a strange habit, but i'm confident he'll grow out of it. a bit of time off, and he might actually forget about it. Gyp was a sod for not retrieving as a pup, so i gave it a rest for a while, then got a shot rabbit, and spent a night or 2 chucking it out of my front door across the garden and going back to watching telly. within a matter of minutes (no more than 15) he twigged that no retrieve = no more fun, and was bringing it back in & dropping it at my feet (it's ok, i had lino...). since then i've had very few problems with his retrieve, except for the odd bout of obstinate salukiness... he's still very young,i lamped mine with older dogs and he soon learnt to retrieve from them. i'd try working him with another more experienced dog but i'd leave him a couple of months first. AS ABOVE ///if that dont work take the spade of him /// yeah, that'll get him to retrieve... Quote Link to post

As I said I don't have the answer to you're prob matey..............But no offence 'whip' dogs don't "Learn" to retrieve watching others do it......If this was the case all those folk with shit# retievers would soon have brilliant one's..........Whichever way 'forward' is with this problem........It's certainly ALONE.........not 'watching' others. All the best with finding a solution! Quote Link to post

All the best with finding a solution! Spot on, try him when he is 12months old. When he catches a rabbit and he feck,s off with it walk the other way. Forget the rabbit, when he as caught a few he will bring them back. My best reteiveing lurcher as a pup, its first 12 rabbits were left all over the feckin place WHEN he was 18months, he was catching he would retrieve a rabbit and jump over a 5 bar gate with it dont forget its not natural for a lurcher to retrieve, they are bred to catch and kill if need be, they not labs.
