honestly, I cant belive some peoples questions on here :wallbash:

your asking for "disadvantages of a muzzle, whats the advantages then, apart from killing underground, defeats the point of rabbiting in my book, underground or overground the rabbit loses(felt a womble song coming on there)

if you cant afford a locator just yet, save up and start ferreting again after the summer,

Well said Stubby!...I've just discovered this fecking ridiculous topic and I can't believe what I'm reading  ...

A muzzle would not stop the ferret staying down and worrying the rabbit so you would possibly still have to dig if you were impatient.

Maybe I'm over suspicious but!...When a new member comes on and asks strange or provocative questions I wonder if there's a hidden agender,...if you get my drift! :hmm:

Particularly when they have a name like kill_that_rabbit, or whatever it is. I might be wrong, it could just be that he's new to the game and a bit naive. If that's the case, then I apologise, but it certainly seems fishy to me, and at the very least it makes our entire community look a bit dimwitted.

actually i think its proved the opposite.. i haven't seen one post by any regular of the board that would promote the use of a muzzle and all the advice was that it was unnessesary and barbaric.. so ... if it was someone trying to cause trouble... they've failed miserably :)

Fair comment lorelei. I was looking at it more from the angle of us all being tarred with the same brush. But it seems common sense is prevailing once more!

I certainly think thats what that member who killed his ferret to enable him to draw the head, then muscle layer , followed by its skull did

Ok, i didn't realise that this was such a touchy subject.

I didnt become a member of this site to be insulted, i'm new to ferreting and was hoping to get a little bit more information on certain aspects of it. If i'd known that this was going to offend anybody i wouldnt have left the post and read up on websites or books or whatever. I just thought that it would have been a better idea to get it from actual people who could give me constructive feedback.

If derogatory comments are all you people can be bothered to leave then perhaps this site is not the place for me.

Oh dear, someone cant take constructive criticism :hmm: Here is the reply I posted earlier for you

'There is no way I would ever use a muzzle on any of my ferrets. In days gone by it may have been the best way forward without the use of locator collars. Times have changed though. No offence intended to the person asking the question at the start of the thread mind - everyone needs to learn somewhere.'

I refer to your comment

'If derogatory comments are all you people '

and would like to make my own comment;

That to me says it all. :wallbash:

For feck sake leave the kid alone. He tried to ask you pros a question dont rip the shit out of him.

1 DON'T use a muzzle it's out dated and cruel.

2 DON'T use a line it can get tangled round roots where you can't dig.

3 Save for a locater or get a young small ferret.

Good hunting see if you can get out with someone who knows what they are doing. :victory:

there not all bitchy tarts on here. :notworthy:

Ferret muzzles...no. Just no.

There's no advantages and many disadvantages.

- Muzzled ferret may get lost and slowly starve to death. A horrible end for any animal, let alone one who is willing to work for you.

-Muzzled ferret may run up against another animal- such as a rat or mink- that it will need it's teeth to deal with. End result, shredded ferret.

-Muzzled ferret may find rabbits in a stop end, and, if your ferret is a diligent worker, will spend ages scratching at it's backside. Now I realise that an unmuzzled ferret will do the exact same thing, but the unmuzzled ferret will sort the rabbit out quicker in my mind, and move on.

- It's an outdated practise which will give ferreters in general a bad name! We do NOT need or want these devices within the ferreting community...no good will come from it.

Now if your ferret is killing and eating underground, feed him a bit of grub before you take him out working. Then he won't be interested in laying up. He'll kill the rabbit and move on. To cut back on underground kills, ensure that you are as quiet as possible whilst setting nets and waiting. A line is not necessary and can get tangled, invest in a locater if you do not wish to ferret unaided.
