muzzles anvantages/disadvantages

I've been out ferreting several times with my hob and have been thinking of ways of stopping him eating the rabbit or getting him out the hole. Muzzles seem like a good idea in concept and was wondering what (if any) the disadvantages are.

Another idea i had was a line attatched to a harness (which i noticed in a pet shop used for "walking a ferret") which is really slack (allowing him to move around freely) but if he gets a rabbit and falls asleep i can just give him a tug and persuade him to come out again. This would really save the loathsomly boring task of diging him out (again!).

Cheers ;)

i wouldnt use a muzzle on a ferret , its pretty cruel think if you lose him or her , its goin to have a slow painful death, as for the line ? no matter what i think a ferret will most likely get buckled up in it then u have a disabled ferret down a hole , and if you start to pul him up you might end up hurting the ferret , just spend alittle more money and get a locator then if it does kill down the ground you can dig the ferret out . hope this helps

using a line on a hob is quite old fashioned now , use a mk3 and if he lays up dig to him .

what happens if you lose him with a muzzle on ?

hmm, well if he was on a line then he woulnt get far! Suppose if he got lost he wouldn't have much chance of eating would he...

I didn't realise using a line was an actual method, curses... i thought i was being original...

Muzzles CAN be OK in certain situations but if fert meets a rat he's fecked. More importantly, if you lose him, he can't eat so he'll die! Ditto ferret lines. The old timers used liners to get to a ferret and rabbit that had killed in. No need now in most situations. Get a locator. Make sure he's not hungry before you go out also.

Hope this helps. Cheers, D.

An old book i have from the 1800's sayes they stitched a small ring to the top & bottom lip & then threaded twine through the two & muzzled them that way, even the auther said it was barbaric in them days :(

if you had the ferret on a line and its chasing rabbits all round the burrow it may run its self round in circles and it would get tangled up round the mud walls and shit just get a locater and a gd shuvel :victory:
