shanec 0
Could someone shed some light on ratting with ferrets. ive only introduced my ferret to ratting and was wondering about the sefety aspect of it, I hate rats and would be very wery of them and possible diseases they could pass on to a ferret or its handler, and how to avoid this. Thanks Edited March 5, 2008 by shanec Quote Link to post
andy s410c 61
The best way to aviod any infections when ferretting rats is not to do it,smoke or dig the longtails out. Some people use ferts for ratting which is their choice, personally i,ve did it a couple of times until a jill i used came off in a bad way & the possibility of Weils disease to man & beast(s) & a load of other nasties.... .Each to their own tho.... COMPO 54
I think ferrets are immune to weils disease? wash your hands after ratting to avoid it yourself Ferrets will occasionally get a few scratches, cuts and sometimes serious bites, however i still ferret rats when the opportunity arises, great sport and some places you cant smoke out or dig there are risks involved in anything worth doing, please remember when ferreting rats they only come accross rats.....................rabbiting, i have bolted cats, stoats, foxes and have heard of several other large and dangerous animals down rabbit holes, that give a worse bite than a rat! shanec 0
I dont mind taking the risks of ratting and so on, the reason im keen to find out the does and donts of ratting is because in the case of weils disease i believe prevention would be better than cure! Quote Link to post

will98 0
i wouldnt rat with ferrets just tip some petrol down the hole and burn them and then no harm to your ferrets Quote Link to post
shanec 0
pouring petrol down holes would be effective alright, but it wouldnt be the job if their in and around hay sheds, its good seeing the rats run before you pump a shot into them, Quote Link to post

I wouldn't use TCP on my ferrets 'cos it's packed full of phenols. My vet said it's okay to use Savlon. After seeing (and paying for] the damage a rat did to one of my cats, I wouldn't use a ferret for ratting either. Quote Link to post
