Alcohol and shooting

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about going out lamping then suddenly remembered I had a glass of wine with dinner. My self imposed rules say that if I've had a drink the rifles stay well and truly locked away, so looks like I'm not going out after all.

However it got me to thinking. Is there any law that says you can't shoot under the influence of alcohol? Or is society simply relying on the common sense of responsible shooters not to drink and then go out shooting, not only putting others but also ourselves at risk?

I suppose for some people who have to drive to get to their permissions the decision is already made for them by the fact you can't drink and drive. But should there be a law covering this?

On one occasion many years ago I saw a couple of hooray henrys supping from their hip flasks whilst on a large pheasant shoot with their shotguns broken over their arms and remember thinking at the time that looks a bit irresponsible. (This was some time ago before I got into shooting myself). Is this common practice or is it strictly frowned upon in those circles?

Anyway, just thought this might make an interesting debate so what does everyone else think about this?

I would have said one glass of wine is OK, but it does hamper shooting ability, I tested that when I was younger. Now I don't shoot if I have had even one, not that I won't be responsible, but I won't be as accurate.

Not sure on the legal standpoint.

I personal don't shoot if i have had a drink, but during shoot season most of the guns i know usually have a glass of port or tot of whiskey at lunch, i think in all circumstances common sense should tell you that the two don't go together.

As far as the law is concerned i wouldn't know but i am sure if you was found to be in possession of a firearm will drunk you would find it hard to get off lightly.
