Eggy 0
My son wants to get a ferret. so i want to get a feel of what we need to get for it to feed. can we just feed mice and other meat, or does it have to be the kibble? i went to the feed store and the ferret display smelled bad the tender said it was the feed they used. anyone know whay? btw im in the us. is it true that jills only have two scent glands? i guess i got off topic a little. thanks <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I give 'em a bit of everything (all raw&fresh) rabbits, squirels, trapped mice & moles, fish, molluscs etc.... But also dry ferret food mixed with some catfood (1:1) in time of lack of carcass (in summer when flies are a problem) I was told to be careful with too much organ meet (liver/kidney) because it can cause a toxic build-up of Vit-A (paralysis) I let mine loose in the garage now and then, and one crunched up a fat hybernating frog (I think they are protected so its probably against the law to feed them!) They also seem to love them nasty munching (crushed) snails (but be careful for snail-pellet poison fed snails!), earthworms, bugs&grubz (the big fat juicy ones), the ocasional egg (once a week) and occasionaly some (old) fruit mixed in. Big grashoppers, etc etc, etc..so basically variety is a +++ Cheers Eggy Quote Link to post
Guest Woody
I feed a variety of meat- whole trapped mice, rabbits, pigeons- I pick up loads of roadkill- all songbirds etc. Occasionally tinned cat food, and cat biscuit. Also raw beef when I get it cheap in the supermarket! Quote Link to post

bobby 3
[hello [bANNED TEXT]...feeding ferrets and keeping them fit and healthy is simple...during the summer months flies are a pain ...dried food is ok but u must allso add flesh any pet shop will sell you frozen mince....you can feed this diet forever...and they will thrive....during the winter i only feed what we catch or shoot and my ferrets are glowing if you feed dried food make sure they have plenty of water Quote Link to post
bobby 3
p.s eggy is right i fed my ferrets on liver and they got rickets to much vitamin a Quote Link to post
Guest Woody
Thats not to say you can't feed some liver! I always get liver when I see it reduced in the supermarket, and the ferrets always get the organs out of anything that I catch or shoot... Quote Link to post
bobby 3
[u r correct woody some liver wont hurt...but at one time i was getting whole pigs livers and only feeding this at the time i didnt know any different...just a bit of advice for somebody starting out Quote Link to post
Guest buzzer
im wondering how often should you feed it once or twice a day. and would a mouse do for one ferret? Quote Link to post
bobby 3
i personaly would not feed liver more than twice a week some people might dissagree....i have been working ferrets for over 30 yrs and at one time lost many ferrets due 2 feeding only liver....1 mouse is definatly not enough ...if your not sure feed to much 2 start see what they leave and go from thier Quote Link to post
Stan 1
in the summer months i normally feed dried food but give them liver every to or three weeks they also get tripe every so often. with the dry food make sure theres plenty of fresh water coz they drink like hell normally when weather turns colder they are put on raw meat rabbits pigeons etc. Quote Link to post

swanseajack 227
get yourself an air rifle, reduce the population of magpies, jackdaw's starlings etc... Quote Link to post
Guest Woody
I feed once a day, in the evenings. Some people feed twice a day. There's no hard and fast rule. A mouse isn't a lot to a ferret...I tend to just throw them in with their meal, or give them as and when I get them, during the day. Quote Link to post
