fox killed my neighbours rabbit and trys to get at my hawk

Recommended Posts

a fox has for the last few weeks bein gettin rather brave in trying its luck in my back garden. a neighbour of mine had a rex rabbit that was her kids and the little red was hungry. 1 distraught neighbour asked me to kill it but i dont know if im in my legal right. can anyone tell me if i can kill it. the council said there is nothing thay can do. a frind has got a gun but cant use that either. poisen is not an option because of the amount of cats that would probably take the bait before the fox does and as for my staffy bein left out well...... theres a little thing called a ban... please can anyone help me other wise i will just .... well lets say it will be the first and only hammer it ever see's.

Let's look at your legal options.

1. You cannot poison a fox.

2. You cannot use a firearm in a built up area.

3. You cannot use your dog to catch the fox.

4. You cannot use Renardine to attempt to repel the fox.

5. DEFRA's Snaring Code Of Practice says "Snares must not be set on or near public footpaths, rights of way, near housing and areas regularly used for exercising domestic animals to avoid capturing pets."

6. You can live trap the animal, but then you have to dispatch it on site. This causes problems with number 2.

Did I miss anything?

Your options are limited. What steps has your neighbour taken to keep the fox out of the garden and away from the rabbits? If there is nothing for it to come back for then it probably won't and revenge seems a little odd.

Seriously look at proofing the damn thing out. An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure. Is there any way it can get into your aviary? If so is there anyway you can keep it out? You'll know how it's getting in so what do you reckon?

I hear ya there.

I've worked in pest control for a long time, did a stint in the Stoke On Trent area too! As far as urban fox control goes it's extremely difficult to legally sort out which is why I always try and talk prevention.

There are thousands of members on this site. Maybe someone who's had a similar problem can advise you? I certainly don't know everything there is to know about fox control and maybe someone else can offer a more practical solution.

its just a pain in the arse. if it was a rat noone would even batter an eyelid if i shot it with the airrifle or even stamped on it. but no because its bigger and not seen as often weve got to leave them be. british law is a load of s**t. i doubt anyone would be able say anything dofferent to you matey. looks like 175 quid is going out my account tonight. fence, battery, solar charger. its got to be worth it. anyway thanks a lot matey. nice one for ya time

Yeah. The sad fact is that Britain is a nation of f****d up hypocrites. We eat supermarket meat and complain the second everything with a furry tail is killed, and call it animal cruelty.

Keep us posted on your set up. If it works for you it might be something others can use in the future.

In this case, as Chris J has said prevention is better than cure given your circumstances.

These are two "old farmer" techneques; some say they don't work, others swear they do. From my own experiance they certanly helped......

Use tights to make a hanging ball using human hair and hang one on each corner of your avery; the other, piss on the floor outside the avery....or do these things on the perimiter of your fence. Pee in a bottle then pour it outside if you want to be more discreat!

Foxes are none too keen on human smells. Might be less efective on urban reds I don't know, and like I said some would poo poo the ideas, but they have been used for years, and as many would swear that they do help control the access of reds....

I personally would live trap then dispatch at will. Lots of options once the little bugger is contained.

Live catch yeah, but what then? Where do you relocate it to? Do you have permission to take it to where it can be legally dispatched?

:icon_eek:Hundred and Seventy Five Quid ??? Jesus! That seems harsh! And a solar panal? WTF's That all about? Isn't it mains powered, at that price? I have a battery operated electric fence here. Can't remember what it cost me. But I most certainly would remember if it had cost me a Ton! Batteries are about £10 and last about a year, I think? Either way, if I went down to the Creamery tomorrow with £175 to spend, I'd hope to come away with enough Mains Powered kit to stop a whole pack of foxes till they died of old age or electrocution. Mains unit costs nothing noticable to run and can power hundreds of yards of wire. I know because a neighbour powers his fences from my bill and I've touched the damn things! :icon_eek: Wish I'd seen this earlier. Might have been able to save ye account such a hammering :(

Chris; What's the craic about Having To despatch on site, mate? Where's that come from?

He's in an urban area so shooting is a no no.

He says he's got a live trap. Which is good but what next? Has he got somewhere to take it to dispose of the pest? It's all well and good live catching but how do you write the epilogue to this particular vulpine?
