I had an Irish Terrier as a kid and thought that would make a fine companion for myself and my part-time daugheter and though that it would be fun to ler it do a little hunting as well. Then I started reading all about terriers on the internet and I'm not sure what an IT is supposed to hunt now since it seems oo big to get in after any thing. Well, there are few and far between here and the ones that are available are show dogs and cost a small fortune, so I started looing at other terriers like the Jack Russle, The Rat terrier, the Border terrier and the Patterdale. It loks like the dogs to work are the patterdals then the jacks and then the borders. Then I found out about "Lurchers", which is something that we don't have over here for whatever reason. I like bigger dogs, so I like the size of them. Also, it's illegal in Massachusettes to do most things that need to be done to hunt with terriers, like dig a critter out of a burrow or a wall in a barn or abandoned house. Nothing about "unleashing the hounds" though! So now I am interested in Lurchers. About 117% of Greyhounds in the USA are for racing and the ones of those that get adopted out are almost always "fixed" and no one here knows what a Lurcher is so no one is trying to breed one so I am having a look at what's available for rescue. Slim pickings. There are two GH/Lab mixes in the area but that's about it! Would that make a game enough dog to course rabits and hares and racoons and Coyotes (I'm not sure if we have any foxes in New England). Could I just use a rescued Greyhound or are they (as I suspect) too fragile for real work? To sum up, I am a dog-searching mess. I have no idea what I want or what I can (legally) do with it. I know that I am interested in Patterdales (wicke rare in my parts), Jack Russles (more common) or a big Rat Terrier, like a Decker (the most common and since I can't use it as a ground dog I like the fact that they are a little bigger and less like a movies star's fsion accesory) or some kind of half-bred sight houd that is game enough and tough enough to not worry about it taking care of itself in a scrap with a critter. Most of all I wnat a good companion for myself and mine and have fond memories of that nice Irish Terrier from my youth. Coments, concerns, criticism or advice are ALL welcom!! There is coursing clubs, and there are heeps of guys out killing coyotes with Staghounds (big lurchers)...you just have to have a look around... Kye,.. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
