Right lads its been a long day, Left after a bite to eat yesterday evening after getting the call. The farmer met me and we headed off in his jeep, well up behind his house. The evening was fine with a few light showers of rain on the way, So we headed up the back field to see where the killing had taken place. He said the foxes had been barking up in the hill the last few nights about eleven o clock, So we set up and sat with the caller on in the field for about 10-15 mins, with the occassional lamp out to see if anything had showen on the horizion.

Nothing  About eight twenty we headed off to see what we could find on the local patch. And within 20 mins saw two other cars lamping the nearby fields, thinking it would be a wase of time on we struggled seeing nothing only hares and rabbits,

Then at about 10 i caught my first sight of foxy about two hundred yards away got set up to take the shot, light on, Scaning the field again he had taken of like his house was on fire :icon_eek: firework up his backside he was GONE and not stoping. :censored: So of we head again when All of a sudden to the field on our left 3 foxes runing around playing hide the sausage we think but as soon as the light hit them again they were off two broke off to the right the other headed straight away from us.....The night was not going well :censored:

So by this time it was getting late and we headed back to the farm were the lambs were taken from quick lamp nothing.

So i put on the mating call of the caller and decided to wait for 5 mins as it is a very large area with a valley in the middle of the field, lamping away we see nothing then two sets of eyes light up on the far hill about 500 600 yards away we leave the light of and keep the caller going with a low volume,

they come in to 450 odd yards and stop on the brow of the hill nestleing in between some bracken they edge their way in all stop.

I can see one at 439 yards the other is at 427 yards. trying everything to get them closer the one at the greatest distance vanishes, hidden from sight only one left, i range again sitting facing us as bold as brass not a move, with a hill for a backstop i decide to try the shot ranging again i get 427 yards

As if it had been caught in a trap not a movement. A quick look at the drop tables 26 clicks in elevation 27 inches, some odd of a drop i tap the farmer to turn the lamp on.

trying to get a steady aim concentrating on my breath, i reach the natural pause, crosshairs fixed, BANG Such a calm night we instantly here THUMB.

The farmer thinks i missed and hit the rising ground behind. Scaning we see nothing its all over So i take a walk down the valley and as i start to climb the far bank i can see something nestled in the foreground of the bracken. SUCCESS a vixen, lying on her side i lift her to inspect the damage,

The whole back flops open in what can only be described as a hole you could put your fist in, i can't believe i hit her longest shot to date on a fox by seven yards and the farmer is over the moon, And say's if i get the other he'll pay me with a butchered lamb for my trouble.............

CHECK THIS OUT......................I'M OVER THE FOOKING MOON WITH THE SHOT.

Amazing shot well done

what rifle do you have?

Sorry for not getting back to ye lads but the net is down here at the minute so using someone elses connection.

i am using a tikka M595 s/s .243. leupold 6.5x20 LR/T M1. arcpest, i also use the lightforce range of lance and striker the striker was used on this night,

i'm not here to shit ye lads but i've been practising for years to get out to these ranges.

i practise by shooting clays with the rifle at set distances out to about 450 yards though i don't think i'll reach this range at night.

i'm always over cautious with long range shots. but i had a large hill for a backstop leading to a mountain so no problem, and the farmer had no livestock futher up.

i use a drop tables and work out the clicks up and write these on the inside of the butler creek caps. so once range is confirmed its down to me to deliver.

the drop tables are tested to make sure they are as accurate as possible, before i use them in the field.

if you asked me to take this shot 2 years ago i couldn't of done it, but put the time in on range work and it pays off, i think i can't beat this shot but it'll be a challenge to try. And i do like to push the limits of my ability. So thank you for all the replys

It's like a game of cat and mouse, JG, i've seen nothing on the farm for a while then their coming out of the woodwork.

There's a few lamping the area but with .22lr and they simply fire if they see a fox trying to take 200 plus yard shots with a .22LR :wallbash:

Their not the brightest lads, but what can ye do. So as a result the foxes never come closer than about 300 yards at the minute and thats only if they don't scatter when they see the lamp come on. The last time out i fluffed to shots within 200 yards but we all get nights like that too.

I'm the mouse at the moment :wallbash: Saw one the night before as well, black as the ace of spades, rotten with mange I'd say. Again, only time he'd stop was behind something. I got the same problem around here, except lads are bring out shotguns, probably shooting at the same ranges as your .22lr guys too SS :clapper: No point in saying anything cos I'd only draw them further onto my own patch! Out again tonight if it'll be fit :gunsmilie:

that fox was shot with sierra 70 grain blitzking's, fairly makes a mess if it conects with bone, i've got a few 58 grain v-max to give a whirl at that distance shortly. and they'll be pushing 3800 fps, so looking forward to see how they do at extended ranges...........

The hornady 58 grains are easy to get of any dealer, molycoated cost about 27euro for a box of twenty. ordinary bullets about 24 to 26 so not much difference.

We can get most of the good brands up here no problem, so there should be no problem down south.
