lurchergrrl 1,441
Just having a think tonight whilst out walking the dogs. I've read quite a few posts where people make reference to road walking their dogs as part of their fitness routine. I know it does a lot of good things for them, tendons etc., but does anyone really enjoy a good road walk? Before I moved here, road walking my dogs was as much as a necessity as a fitness issue. I lived in the city, and had to make do with tiny pockets of greenspace or else long road walks. I like my dogs fit so ended up doing a lot of walking at a good clip through traffic, past bikes, joggers, construction etc. And even though I could now stand round while they exercise themselves on a field, I find I quite like a fast road walk. They have to keep up and pay attention to me 'cause I'm not stopping without a really good reason and I don't like to mess about. So now it's not just about the fitness but it's actually kinda fun to have them respond to the slight signals on the lead - does anyone else enjoy it, or is it simply a fitness routine for most? Paid 935
I enjoy it, but use a mountain bike, which I love to get out on anyway, pre dogs. Quote Link to post

cúagusgiorraí 57
I enjoy getting out everyday, rain or shine and excercising the dogs. I might take them out on the bike or let them go for a swim or trek across a few fields. I try to do something different everday. Quote Link to post

We go differents routes, different places etc. I think it really helps them to be well rounded if they're on different terrain daily. Quote Link to post

Just being with them is enjoyable, especially if it is good weather. Quote Link to post

maty j 6
i must be the only one who finds road walking boring then she gets a little bit now and then 3-6 miles whenever i go but id much rather be out just mouching or walking the woods. the dogs cover a far greater distance that way and are using more muscle groups. Guest WILF
In my humble opinion road walking is a waste of time............buy a lamp Quote Link to post

Ossie 11
me & Gyp walk miles every day, on & off road. i keep a pony on a field in the next village, so we walk there & back, on the road mainly, or if we can go on the cross-field footpaths, we'll walk the road on the way there, and the paths on the way back. we've also got a nice quiet lane around the back of the village, so we walk round there, keeping on the lane to the end for a 3 mile walk, cutting back on the first footpath for a 2 mile walk, or the second for a 2 1/2 mile walk. i love being out with the dog, i'm getting a tattoo on my wrist that says "I'd rather be walking the dog", cos come rain or shine, there's nothing i enjoy more we're getting in training to walk the Peddars Way in June to raise money for a local charity Quote Link to post

tia.kins 56
I do a bit of all sorts with the dogs..........but prefere to just get out and start covering ground on the moors. It sworks the dogs over well and is "moor" interesting.....plus you get the odd catch If i road work them, then is on the bike for me.....I'll pick a road across the moor and the dogs are off free to run behind me / play catch up! Lennard 10
Road walking for me is combining the nice with the necessary...I have no car and my shops are 5 kms away so if I want groceries I take the dogs next to the bike...and we make a stopover at places where they can walk free. And as the bees season is beginning they come along to the bees next to the bike, a 12 km trip including a 2 km off leash part next to the canal. They don't know any beter than that they are next to the bike for 1.5 hours almost every day. L Quote Link to post
